I am trying to draw simple squares to make a layout with. Like the ones you draw in Paint. I could always do this before, but now they're showing up as these solid colored squares with a black border around them. I've changed all the settings to try to get rid of this, but it won't work.

I'm looking to draw one like the one that isn't filled in; it won't let me draw them in whatever color I want or anything. It's so frusterating. I think the settings got messed up. Can someone help pleeeease? I hope I made some sense. lol

i have a newer version of photoshop so it looks different but you need to have the single square on the end selected like i have in this screen shot...

I don't know how to get this to work in your version, so you might have to use Help to look it up, but you should try using paths, rather than shapes. (I have no idea how shapes work.)

Paths are vector graphics (look it up on google; i can't explain this well right now). If you draw a rectangular path, you can see a rectangle, but it's not there. That's just the path of the rectangle. Paths have stroke and fill - stroke is the color that follows the lines, and fill is the color inside the lines. Once you have a path, right-click on it, and you should be able to set the stroke and the fill. If you're going for an empty square, you should set it to no fill, and whatever stroke you want (you can even use brushes!).

Try that and see if it works for you.

I don't know if you were using shapes or paths before, but if it was paths, it sounds like you've accidentally set the fill to black. The one in your screen capture is a shape. I don't know how to help with that.

I switched over to Paths instead of Layers on my little box, but I'm still can't draw my boxes I want. I am really confused. I still cannot seem to draw any things except plain black boxes and filled in boxes with borders. This is weird because I USED to be able to draw regular boxes in Photoshop.

you only want to have an outline? then draw a plain black box, go to "fill" and set that to 0%
then double click on the layer and give it a 1px solid border.

i'm a bit confused on what kind of boxes you mean though.
