View Full Version : making a *real* website
minay 04-03-2003, 01:04 AM hi!
my dad owns this small company, and he noticed that i could (somewhat) make a website, and he asked me to make him one! of course I wouldnt want to put his website on a free host, so how *do* you build a website from scratch?
do you *buy* a server?
where?
how much space does it have?
does it do cgi/php etc etc?
does buying a server give you a domain name?
where do you get a domain name?
when your making the website, does it work the same as if your making a free-hosted one? like you still ftp it to the server?
ugh. i think this is a way to big a project for me.
younghistorians 04-03-2003, 01:35 AM hello!
im hosting my site, at www.xstreamhost.com . Its 30 bucks a year, and you get a ton!
I also bought my domain name at www.godaddy.com , for 8.95.
minay 04-03-2003, 01:44 AM thanks, but I just talked to my dad, and he says he wants his own everything. own server and stuff. ack. he's making my life harder! poo
younghistorians 04-03-2003, 01:47 AM OWN A SERVER?
Why not buy space?????? buying a dedicated server will cost him $130-$400 a month!
minay 04-03-2003, 02:01 AM OUCH. that is a lot.
Can you tell me how it works? because I have no knowledge about this at all. why does it cost that much? i mean, a server is like the hard drive of your domain right? so if you have your own, than you can just upload all the files about your site there and tada! you have a site.
sorry, its just really confusing to me. =/
Dude128 04-03-2003, 03:07 AM a dedicated server is a computer that a hosting company dedicates to your site- yours is the only one on that machine- and they have a high speed internet connection and they have to have 24/7 power (including backup power) for it. thats why it costs so much- they have to purchase servers, keep them operating 24/7, pay for Internet connections, and all that for only one site. shared hosting is much cheaper because they can have hundreds of accounts on each server.
you could host the site yourself, but you need to have a reliable (most hosts, and all good hosts have redundant connections) Internet connection, and you need to set up some software on your machine- a web server (software, not to be confused with a server, the hardware), any extras you want like PHP, etc.
about what you get- it all depends on the host and package. some give you more bandwidth or space than others, some offer things like PHP, others don't. you'll have to shop around to get exactly what you need.
from what i saw of the page younghistorians posted, i would NOT go with xstreamhost- it seems that the URL you have to use is xstreamhost.com/~username- that looks extremely unprofessional.
also, younghistorians- advertising isn't allowed ;)
having your own server would require getting a dedicated (static IP) connection to the internet. check with your current internet connection company to see what they charge for a "static IP". this usually falls under a "business" package of some kind and can be quite expensive.
as for the memory and programs involved, that all depends on what you download and have installed.
then of course there could be a whole barrage of problems with things not connecting right, not compatible with other things, etc, etc...
you may be able to find out a bunch by doing a google search on setting up a server.
http://www.google.com
some people find it easy, others hard. i looked at it at one time. that's about as far as i got and thought... "ok... i am supposed to do what?"
*my opinions start*
just sign up with a good host and use them.
why re-invent the wheel?
you can search through these forums for opinions on different hosts as well as domain name registrars. find one that works for what your needs require.
*my opinions end*
minay 04-04-2003, 12:20 AM oooohhh...*breathe* that was a mouthful.
okay. so basically I'll just go look for a good host and register a domain name right?
so how does *that* work?? (here we go again)
i pay the host every month/year for the space, but then I get like a http://im-a-host.thecompanyname.com with it. and thats "unprofessional" like what you said before. so how do I change the name into something more like "www.thecompanysname.com" ??
Xiphias 04-04-2003, 12:23 AM Look at http://www.metrahost.net, they have some nice cheap plans. To get your own www.domainname.com name, you get hosted and then by the name for about $10 from nearly any webserver out there
tenshigirl 04-04-2003, 01:23 AM Hi,
There are a lot of domain registras and hosting companies out there that can help you get started.
Before you buy space, you would need a yourdomain.com, and that's your own so you don't have to use a subdomain like you have up there.
You can probably get a list of companies and registras by doing a search for domain and hosting companies.
Good luck!
minay 04-04-2003, 02:05 AM thanks a lot! your posts really helped. :)
one last thing! so i buy my own domain, and i ftp the files in the server of the host that i have? so the files are in the hosts' server, but it shows up as www.mydomain.com??
just to clear it up. :)
yes.
buy a domain (usually paid for once a year).
buy space on a host (also usually paid for once a year).
some hosts offer domain registration at the same time, so you might not have to go to two separate websites to do this.
once your domain name is registered, you enter your host account information into your domain name account. this tells the domain name where your host is located. your host will supply you with two or more sets of numbers for this effect.
after that is all setup, you will have your own "www.yourdomainname.com" site!
for about the first 48 hours, you may have to use the host's address such like...
www.hostname.com/yourname/
but then your domain name will kick in and then you are good to go. files and such are uploaded to the host site (to your account area).
minay 04-05-2003, 12:40 AM thanks a lot!!!! alright, now all I have to do is find a great host!
I will leave this topic with one final request: if you know of a great, cheap host than please pm me!
alright, wish me luck! I hope I do a *decent* job. :)
