no, .htaccess isn't the file type. It should be called:

.htaccess.txt

I have no idea why it has the dot before it but it just does.

Nothing comes before .htacess. It is not called .htaccess.txt, if it is named that, rename it with your FTP program to just .htaccess.

It is not called .htaccess.txt. Some editors name it that way though, and a simple renaming of the file using an FTP program will give you .htaccess.

the htaccess file has no "filename" and no further extensions on it. epolady is correct.

.htaccess

there should NOT be any .txt on the end.

does your host support htaccess capabilities?
did you upload the file in ASCII mode through FTP?
do you have the CHMOD of the file set to 644?

From here (http://www.lissaexplains.com/html6.shtml#block)....

Create a text file as described above with the .htaccess extension.

If you're hosted in some places...they already have an .htaccess file thing. You can just change the address in there too the address you want to use...I hope I was helpful...=S
