View Full Version : Ipod
westernrider 08-02-2004, 07:58 PM Ok, so I have a gazillion CDs and I am sick of lugging them around. So, I thought a good idea would be an ipod. Small, lots of memory, trendy (haha). But, 300-400 bucks is not cheap and that would be a large chunk out of my bank account. So I was wondering if people have bought it and have had good experience.... bad experience ect. Any guidence would help bunches :)

LesPaul59 08-02-2004, 08:17 PM Yeah, it would help me too, since Sophie showed me that link earlier and now I want one
zetsubou 08-02-2004, 08:33 PM Go for it. IMO it's the best around right now, except for lack of ogg vorbis support (nooo! Ah well, my collection's mostly mp3 anyway). Some people whine about the battery, but it holds up perfectly fine for me (and I abuse the crap out of it). Only regret I have about my iPod is not buying a bigger model; I've only got an old 10gig model so I can't fit everything on it that I want.
Also, if you buy it, buy a case (http://www.ipodlounge.com/gearguide_specs.php?id=C0_30_5) too. It would suck to drop $300/$400 on something just to have it scratched up as soon as you get it. The screen just seems so...vulnerable without it.
westernrider 08-02-2004, 08:36 PM noo... more accessories... now I really want one... ahhh
kittycat 08-02-2004, 08:39 PM I don't personally have one, but I know someone who does and they love it :P I want one badly, but a) I don't have a Mac or WindowsXP and b) I'd be paying 3-400$ just for the mini. Though the mini is the one I want because it's so cute and little and comes in nice colours :P
Monkey Bizzle 08-02-2004, 08:42 PM i have one and i think it was a waste of 300 bucks! i have the 15GB 3rd generation model and if it gets too hot it doesn't work so it's hard to listen to it in the car. also, you can get a dell jukebox or whatever it's called that holds just as much music and doesn't cost so much money... i wish i would have done that instead...

Lil Sarah 08-02-2004, 08:47 PM Go for it Sophie! I was thinking of getting one, but I doubt I would use it. And I don't want my parents to spend 400 bucks on me for something I wouldn't use [which they've done already! lol ;p]. I say go for it. If you'd use it, it's a good investment! <3
salomeyasobko 08-02-2004, 08:59 PM wow that's a lot of money!! if you have the money then go for it, but if you don't, why not try a regular MP3 player? if you need more space, you can always get one of those little memory chips that don't cost too much. i have one and i like it a lot :D
Dude128 08-02-2004, 09:17 PM I know a total of 3 people that own iPods. one is a regular Mac user and he's in love with his, and another seems to like his. the third person I think likes his EXCEPT, when he first tried to use it with his computer, for some reason it majorly screwed things up for him. as soon as he plugged it in, his CD-RW and DVD-ROM drives stopped working, and it took him like 2 weeks to get them to work again because he couldn't find any explanation... and I don't think he knows exactly why they started working again :P
Makar 08-02-2004, 11:38 PM Some people whine about the battery, but it holds up perfectly fine for me...
Yeah, the battery dies after about 18 months or so and you have to buy a $100 replacement. At least I think it's a hundred bucks...around there.
Haha, just that alone would turn me off.
LesPaul59 08-02-2004, 11:55 PM wow, I was checking out www.delldj.com This is interesting....
Each have some pros and cons, I might just do an objective review :P
westernrider 08-03-2004, 12:53 AM dang it... now I am so confused about what I should do

Um, why? That's really not that bad. For example, using my CD player as much as my iPod, I go through 2AA batteries in about a week. Assuming a 4 pack is $2.50, that would be $2.50 per 2 weeks, or $1.25 per week. In 18 months, or ~72 weeks, that's $90. $10 more isn't really unreasonable.
And about that Dell DJ thing.. If I absolutely had to get something other than an iPod, I'd get a Creative Zen Xtra (http://www.nomadworld.com/products/Jukebox_ZenXtra/). Mmmmyes.
Also, for relevency (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v317/murderfreak/apennysaved.gif).
LesPaul59 08-03-2004, 01:03 AM I'm actually not liking the dell very much as I'm doing this, I might look at this other one, too. The iPod is more...versital. Besides the iPod having the alarm, games, calendar, and phonebook which the Dell doesn't, the iPod has MUCH more accessories. The Dell, however, has a longer battery life and holds more songs, but here's the snatch I found in the small print. The dell's 9000 songs is based on 64 kbps, and the iPod is based on 128. There is no different is capacity, both are 20 GB.
I do have to say though, that isn't that good Zets. I use mine everyday for a few hours and can get atleast 3 sometimes 4 weeks of battery.

Ah yes...I remember my CD player...(poor thing, it died)...it ATE batteries. I'd go through 2 in...probably a 3 days. That's a lot of money...

Oh my god. What's an iPod????? I am so getting on e of those Creative zen Xtras :P:P:P:P

I love that comic...
if you're not completely sure what to get, get a cheaper regular mp3 player and test it out, because a lot of people i know go through "phases" where they like certain songs/types of music, so if you get one with less memory, you can put random songs from each of your cds that you like or want to listen to at that certain time, because i doubt you love every song on each cd.
if you find that the regular one was enough then you just saved yourself a lot of money, if not, by the time you should decide the prices should have gone down...or you could just wait it out till more reviews are in and the price goes down(so if its not a good buy to you, you didn't waste "a large chunk out of [your] bank"...or you can be cheap and just wait till christmas...its only 5 months :S and by then there will probably something new
but from experience don't spend a lot even if the reviews say its amazing because everyone has different opinions cause my brother bought a nomad type thing(it wsas the one with the most space at the time) not too long after it came out(ages ago over 3 years...i think) the reviews said it was great (then), (its like an mp3 thing but the size of a cd player) and from it i've found its big, he doesnt use the 2 gigs of space, and its the most inconvinient thing ever when you add a playlist but you just don't want a specific song....:S but now theyve made new smaller ones...
LesPaul59 08-03-2004, 01:36 AM Heh well most songs in the genres I listen to aren't your 4 minute songs [such as the 42:03 progressive metal song I'm listening to right now], so I'll need some space :P Plus I'm such an album buyer [+100] that it is just annoying to carry around all of that crap these days.
westernrider 08-03-2004, 01:54 AM I still think I am wanting one of thoes ipods... I am so torn... lol, I don't want my ipod to stop working or go out of date in only 2 years... especially when you are putting down a hefty 300 bucks for it... arrrr
LesPaul59 08-03-2004, 02:18 AM Check out the creative zen. You can store media too, just like iPod. I doubt it has the phonebook/calendar/alarm, but who needs them? :P and it's 60GB for less money. and it has car adapter too. I wouldn't hook my iPod into a stereo, so no lose for me.
zetsubou 08-03-2004, 04:09 AM I do have to say though, that isn't that good Zets. I use mine everyday for a few hours and can get atleast 3 sometimes 4 weeks of battery.
7-8 hours a day + power-hungry cd player = buying batteries in bulk.
LesPaul59 08-03-2004, 05:24 AM Yeah that's what Costo or Sam's club or something like that is good for :P I don't know if they're nationwide in the US, but it's a huge warhouse where you buy things in big bulk for less money :P
zangerbanger 08-03-2004, 06:55 AM I recently got an mp3 player for my birthday, but I still wish I had an iPod. My friend has one and he takes it everywhere he goes. Whenever I see him carrying it around, a surge of jealousy occurs. I asked my parents to buy me one, but they said that I should be content with the mp3 player... but I'm not! Arghhh! I think I'm going to have to get myself a job and buy me one with my own money!
Makar 08-03-2004, 05:23 PM Yeah that's what Costo or Sam's club or something like that is good for :P I don't know if they're nationwide in the US, but it's a huge warhouse where you buy things in big bulk for less money :P
Actually, they are nationwide. Or I know Sam's Club is, anyway. Since you know, they're the Wal-mart people (Samuel Walter). :P
It really comes in handy in some parts of the country though. When my uncle was stationed in Hawaii for a couple years, you know, the prices over there are crazy since it's an island and all, and practically everything is imported. But they joined Sam's Club and were able to get all normal prices as they would back on the mainland. Everything was in bulk, of course, but that's alright because they have a big family. :D
[/offtopic bit]
LesPaul59 08-03-2004, 05:28 PM Oh, learn something new everyday :P
Monkey Bizzle 08-03-2004, 05:31 PM well, if you are going to get the ipod just cause it has contacts and games and stuff, then get a cellphone you can download ringtones nowadays that sound just like the real thing!! LOL. the games on the ipod are a crappy version of solitaire... WOW!!!
LesPaul59 08-03-2004, 05:35 PM Exactly, that's why I'm getting the Creative nomad zen xtra :P. I think I might be in love :P
westernrider 08-03-2004, 05:56 PM no, I wouldn't be getting it for the games. I think for me it is more because I trust the apple company because they always come out with pretty hardy things. I do not know much about the other company. So, I think I have my mind set. Ipod it is :P
LesPaul59 08-03-2004, 06:49 PM I trust Creative, I have used their media player, and in my old comp I ran their Soundblaster 16 bit sound card. Worked beautifully.
