View Full Version : gif image slicing
twix2006 07-18-2004, 05:52 PM this is weird..and i'm totally stumped as to what to do: my gif image saves nicely without any of the weird dots from color resolution, but when i go to slice it on JASC and save it, the slices have the color dots. how do i get rid of those dots on the slices?
kittycat 07-18-2004, 09:10 PM Haven't used PSP in a while, but somewhere on the image map page there's a button where you can change optimisation settings... If I remember correctly, a 'format' section where you choose the file type, an optimise button beside it... make sure you apply the settings to the whole image as well.
TrueGemini 07-19-2004, 09:32 AM I SAW THAT. I JUST SAVE THEM AS JPEGS.
twix2006 07-19-2004, 02:31 PM what do i set the settings to?
wolfy713 07-19-2004, 08:10 PM a file type i always like to use is PNG. they're about the same size as JPEGS but with much better quality. the only negative thing i found was that PNGs are only sliiiiiiiiightly darker than the original, but you would literally have to get them side by side to tell.

twix2006 07-21-2004, 08:18 AM hm i actually did save my image as .png once, but (and i don't kno if this is supposed to happen or not) when i went to see my image from my documents, all the transparent parts were shown as black..is that suppoesd to happen? (i never use png). and also, will slicing a png stop the weird optimizing dots?
kittycat 07-21-2004, 04:30 PM PNG transparency isn't entirely supported in all browsers (I know IE for sure doesn't support it, not sure about others.) If you slice your image in that format there shouldn't be any of the dots you were referring to.
twix2006 07-21-2004, 04:32 PM stink..well i use IE. hmm...so what color would the transparency turn into? i looked at the image from my documents..so it wasn't online yet.
kittycat 07-21-2004, 04:46 PM Not sure about the background colour, you could look through these pages for ways to fix it: http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&ie=UTF-8&q=png+transparency+ie
Or just change the optimisation settings in PSP.
twix2006 07-21-2004, 05:01 PM if i changed the settings, what would i change it to?
kittycat 07-21-2004, 05:08 PM You could try 256 colours and 0 dithering (think that's the word..), keep the transparency as well.
The number of colours can be made smaller if it's a basic image, which will also make the image size smaller.
Just use whatever you use for normal GIF optimising.
twix2006 07-21-2004, 05:29 PM well actually, i've never really optimised my gifs *embarrassed look* and i'm not super good with photoshop or jasc :(. i've actually tried this optimising gifs tutorial thing but it didn't seem to have changed anything..the original gif is fine, but when i go to slice it and i look at the specific pieces i see dots
kittycat 07-21-2004, 07:41 PM Not sure which tutorial you used, but this one (http://www.jasc.com/support/learn/tutorials/archive/paintshoppro/imageslicergifjpg.asp?pg=1) (step 5) optimizes a GIF to the highest quality with image slicing.
If you have a lot of colours in your image it's still going to have little dots on it, just because gifs only support a max of 256 colours.
twix2006 07-22-2004, 05:58 AM ok thanks! i used the tutorial you gave me..i guess i can't really improve it anymore...the yellow on my image shows up normally but the red and green have some dots..but they're not TOO obvious...thanks! :)
