View Full Version : What is art?
AiJahya 07-15-2004, 02:06 AM I always like finding out what other people think about things... And lately, I've been trying to figure out what my major in college is going to be, and since I love art, I'm kind of leaning towards an art major with a music minor (heh...we'll see, I guess).
Anyway, since I've been thinking a lot about art, I've been wondering what people consider to be art. Do you like abstract, photography, sculpture, etc? Would you consider abstract, photo manip., etc, to be art?
pandafairy 07-15-2004, 02:31 AM Well of course im not into art as are yet i play an instrument and love to draw but for some reason the art i luv is landscape i just like looking at different places and wonderin what it would be like there and I think abstract is an art.

Owlie42 07-15-2004, 03:10 AM Art, to me: must entail an emotional response either from artist or its audience.
We had a discussion about this during my art II class...:)

i was just about to say the same thing! :D except you worded it better than i was going to ;)
it doesn't take much for something to be considered "art" to me.. i don't really know how to describe it in words but if you show me some things and ask me if it they are "art" to me, then maybe you'll start to understand what i mean.. :o
westernrider 07-15-2004, 03:43 AM well, art can be anything really. It is a hard thing to explain. It is just where someone makes something that is creative that has emotion... I guess. :P You could have a big stack of grass and depending on the direction you take it in it could be art.

hmn.. that's a good idea! *is inspired*
westernrider 07-15-2004, 03:49 AM lol... I am always happy to be an inspiration
weird girl 07-15-2004, 05:50 AM I agree with westernrider's definition. :)
It doesn't take much to be considered art to me either. Although some art I find very bizarre and such. :P
AiJahya 07-15-2004, 02:52 PM I've always thought art should be more than something like an unmade bed surrounded by empty vodka bottles, magazines, and dirty clothing (I'm serious, there's actually a museum displaying that). Or an empty room in which the lights flicker (yes, there's a museum "displaying" that, too). I guess it takes a little bit more for me to call something art...

If you want to find that you just need to go to my uncles house
Shirl 07-15-2004, 04:07 PM Do you guys consider writing as art? I love to write. Give me a pen and paper and I'll write for hours! :D
westernrider 07-15-2004, 04:10 PM ooo that is hard to say. I think some writting can be very beautiful and artistic... so yes... and no... I wouldn't call "Ping" (if you remember that children book) art :P
Shirl 07-15-2004, 04:12 PM No, not that kind of writing. I mean, I often write what I'm feeling. Alot of stories and poems that I write reflect my emotional status at the time I was writing them. However, I only share my writing pieces with very few people.
westernrider 07-15-2004, 04:17 PM mmmhmmm... that is what I am saying. Writing can be art, once again, depending on the direction you take it. I am just saying not all writing is art.
Shirl 07-15-2004, 04:22 PM ^Oh yes, I agree. You'd be quite suprised if you were in my Sophmore english class last year. I had to review this guys paper. He was 2 years older than me (I'm 16) and he had the vocabulary of a third grader, and absolutely no sentence structure at all. His paper was something like: "my freids and I we play footbal becuz it is very fun and i like it, we be playin it everday after scool at a feild buhind my house" Yes, poor grammar annoys the H*** out of me, but honestly now, an 18 year old guy should at least know how to write!
westernrider 07-15-2004, 04:27 PM I am not the best at grammar. I will have a few floops here and there... mainly because of my bad spelling... but at least I try to get things right. At my school I am the only one who has a true passion for writting... so I will write a 5 page story... while they write a one paragraph piece of crap.
But I think writing is wonderful... you can show alot about how your brain and emotions are through your writing... so I think when you let people read the things you have done it is sort of like you are showing yourself to them. Writing is a hard thing to master.
Shirl 07-15-2004, 04:34 PM I agree. I love writing. There is only one thing I love more than writing. Learning. I live on knowledge. :D I love knowing so much.
AiJahya 07-15-2004, 05:31 PM I love writing, too, and I'd consider a lot of writing art... It really just depends on how well it's written. Poetry, and especially good poetry, I would definitely consider art. As for stories...I guess it'd depend on the story.
Shirl 07-15-2004, 05:34 PM Well, the stories that I do write, usually are extremely long and have way too much personal thought put into them for me to share them.
weird girl 07-15-2004, 08:43 PM I love writing, but I can't write much at all. I am the person who will write a measly paragraph, but I put thought into that paragraph.
I have admiration for JK Rowling, because even though I don't like Harry Potter, I'm amazed at how she can write an 800 page novel. I couldn't write a 50 page story if my life depended on it.
I also like O. Henry because he wrote a lot of good short stories, and in a way I can relate to him. :P
Shirl 07-15-2004, 08:45 PM ^I can. :) I've written longer :D
weird girl 07-15-2004, 08:56 PM Wow! :)
My art (writing included) is generally very silly; it reflects a bit on the personality of the creator. :P I love drawing comics. Comics are among my favorite things to do. :D
Shirl 07-15-2004, 09:00 PM :D I drew a comic strip for my spanish class last year. :P
westernrider 07-15-2004, 09:54 PM I like working with clay... I am making a clay horse thing right now...and man... I am so proud of it.. lol... that is another thing so wonderful about art... once you are done you can say "wow... I did that"
Cherchezlafemme 07-15-2004, 11:46 PM art to me is from painting, to drawing, to computer graphics, to theatre, to dance, to music (instrumental and vocal), and to sculpture :) cos i do them all lol
