Hey all, I'm looking for a website-hosting company. I'm gonna put up my own domain, and I really need the URL to some good and reliable website-hosting company!!! I am planning to put up a BIG website with a lot of content and I think a lot of people will visit my website...So UNLIMITED SPACE and UNLIMITED BANDWITH/DATA TRANSFER would be great!!! Does anybody know anything about this? I can't wait to put up my very own domain, and I really wanna learn more about domain related stuff :) If anyone has a list over web-hosting companies or would like to suggest the web-hosting company they use, I would really appreciate it :D I can't wait to hear from you all!!!

Yeah...I understand that there is no such thing as unlimited bandwith and space...But does anyone know about a place where you can get about 5000 MB of space and 100 GB of data transfer/bandwith a month? That's what I'm lookin' for!!! Cause I'm gonna have a pretty big website, and 500 MB of space and 10 GB of bandwith/data transfer a month just won't do...

I *really* hope that someone on here can help me out with that :) *fingers crossed*

Thanks for replying!

100GB??!! What could you have that needs 100GB of bandwidth and 5GB of space?

If that's what you need though, you'll have to look at resellers. I don't think you'll find too many shared hosting plans that'll go that high.

indianbean

Yes I agree those are monstrous amounts. I use powweb and it works fine. It is 500 MB storage and 30 GB bandwidth a month. I only use a fraction of the storage and the bandwidth, but I know other powweb users with ecommerce sites and just more popular sites that don't even approach the limit. And the price is right.

Hey Alcy

Yeah - I know that 100 GB of bandwith and 5 GB of space sounds like a lot, but I'm putting up a video/MP3 website w/ a photo gallery. I have a lot of friends who are interested in checking out the website, and for every person who stream a video or listen to an MP3; It will take up bandwith!!! I'm having a photo gallery that I wanna put up, and I'm constantly adding new pics. That's why I want big space and a high amount of bandwith.

You said that I have to look at resellers. I'm not so much into this - So what is a reseller??? Do ya have any direct URLs? Do you know of any hosting plans what so ever that will go that high? I mean...There are a lot of websites out there w/ a lot of content/audio/video - And stuff like that takes up a lot of bandwith!!! So I'm just gonna keep my fingers crossed and hope for the best. Let's hope that someone can help me out with this!

Hi indianbean

I know that I need a lot, so I really hope that I'll find what I'm lookin' for! Thanks a bunch for telling me a lil bit 'bout PowerWeb :D Too bad they don't have a plan for more space, or else I would have signed up in no time!!! It sounds like a great hosting company!

I really hope for the best :) Thanks for trying to help me out!!! You guys rock!

Yes that is a lot of stuff! Something you should consider is copyrighted material like mp3s and images aren't allowed at a lot of hosts. I know for one Powweb doesn't allow it, there are people that ask that very question in their forum. Actually Powweb covers that and more in their FAQs. A whole lot about hosting related topics can be learned from just reading their FAQs and features etc. at Powweb, they are straightforward about everything.

You mentioned that you've seen other sites that offer audio and video. You might look around their sites and see if their host is noted on there somewhere. If its not you could do a whois search and look at their nameserver numbers that sometimes tells the host. I've seen some hosts that tout "unlimited bandwidth" but in the small print it has limitations that don't allow unlimited bandwidth.

You might try doing a search in google or yahoo or something and look for hosts that have what you're looking for. :)
I entered 'web hosts' and got a lot of results

http://www.google.com/custom?q=web+hosts&cof=BGC%3A%23ccccff%3BAH%3Acenter%3BGL%3A0%3BS%3Ah ttp%3A%2F%2Fwww.indianbean.com%3BAWFID%3A7eab54176 962f52f%3B

I use powweb, ipowerweb is another host that is close but not quite as good as powweb. I've heard good things about ehostsource too. :)

Resellers are just that, re-sellers. There is the option sell hosting to others - that's why they come with so much more space/bandwidth. But you can use it for just your domain if you need all the space ^^

Hi indianbean

I know that it's a lot of stuff, but I really love what I'm doing - So I really wanna put up this website :) I'm actually recording my own songs and burn 'em into MP3s and making lil videos for them! I'm also taking my own pictures w/ a digital camera, so this is for a personal website :D I am planning on putting this website up so that more people can download and check out my stuff!!! I'm gonna make a Guestbook and a Message Board so that people can check out my music and gimme feedback on it. So it's NOT copyrighted material - It's my own. I know all about the copyright stuff though, but that won't be a problem for me!!! Thanks for letting me know 'bout that though.

I have looked around at the sites that offer audio and video, but their host is not noted anywhere on the websites...Ahhh...That totally zzzzs! If you or anyone else knows about any big websites which has their host noted somewhere on the site; Please lemme know, will ya!!!

How exactly do you do a "Who Is" search? I've never looked at any name server numbers that tells the host. Is that hard to find out??? Can you please tell me a lil bit more about that?

You are so right; I have seen a dozen websites that offer "Unlimited Bandwith", but the small print has limitations that don't allow unlimited bandwith...You are so right!!! And that's my problem!!! I saw this website yesterday that offer "Unlimited Bandwith", but they only offer 25 GB of bandwith a month. How much is that??? How many MB of content do you think it's room for on a site that offer 25 GB of bandwith a month? Do you think 25 GB of bandwith a month will be enough for my MP3, video and photo gallery website if I get about 40 visitors every day??? How much is 25 GB of bandwith? I hope that someone have the time to answer these questions.

I will definitely do a Yahoo and Google Search and look for website hosts that offer a high amount of bandwith. Thank you so much for entering 'web hosts' for me. You're so nice and helpful!!! Thanks!

Thanks for letting me know more 'bout this!!! I really hope I find what I'm looking for! *fingers crossed*

Hi Alcy

Do ya know where I can find any good resellers? Do you have any direct URLs for any resellers so that I can check it out? Thanks for letting me know about this! I hope to hear from you about this sometime soon :)

Yeow!! Singing and dancing yourself! You must be ambitious, best of luck. Doing a whois search is really quite simple and entirely legal. The Whois database is kind of like the phone book for the internet. Go to this site

http://www.networksolutions.com/cgi-bin/whois/whois

and enter

photoservancy.com

and the nameserver numbers or domain servers as they call them will be listed and let you know where there host is.

Domain servers in listed order:
NS17.EHOSTSOURCE.COM
NS18.EHOSTSOURCE.COM

That site is hosted at www.ehostsource.com

if you were to look mine up

No Advertising Please.

it would say powweb.com

that Whois search only works for sites that have actual domain names like domain.com or domain.net not a free geocities site or something.

You might consider something cheap like powweb or ehostsource
or some other cheap webhost, I am willing to bet that its plenty.
The real high bandwidth hosts charge a LOT more because it is dedicated hosting which means the customer isn't sharing the server with a lot of others. It probably don't sound like much when you consider todays computers have like 100 GB hard drives, but 30 GB of bandwidth for one month is a lot.

Good luck, Will

...

5 GB of disc space

and

100 GB of monthly transfer

???

Is that a lot? Do you all think that will be enough space/bandwith for a website that's gonna contain my original MP3s, videos and Photo Gallery? (For my music project)

Does anyone have the time to explain about how much bandwith and space that actually is?

Thanks in advance :D

I think the space should be enough, but you probably should get a lower amount of bandwidth. As the popularity of your site grows you can always upgrade and you'll save a lot of money that way!!

Sabrina, I suggest you start with a free host, or a very cheap host, at first. There absolutley no way you're gong to need that much space and bandwidth in your first month.

Does anyone have the time to explain about how much bandwith and space that actually is? And as for that, 5GB of disc space is ALOT!

Ok, just as an exmple, My hard drive is full of MP3s, vidioe files, images, and a bunch of other just that I downloaded for some unknown reason. My "my shared folder" is about 7 GB, but, you mustnt forget that it incluydes 800+ MP3s over 50 Music videos, 5 movies(one of witch takes up a whole gigabyte), and 300 compressed images.

And as for bandwidth, if I were to put all that on my site(whitch I would never do) , and I get, 100 Visitors a day and if all of them streamed 50 MP3s, 2 videos and looked at 30 images, you would use up about 1.3MB/day or 33.9GB/month, and hun, thats alot of money. Most sites dont even get 1.3GB of transfer per day, unless it's like MTV.com or something, so, mm .. such a big site wouldn't be a good idea unless you are the daughter of Bill Gates, or something. But one way or another, good luck.

You obviosly arent gonna have anywhere close to that in a month, so start with the cheapest host you can find that offers a pretty good amought of Bandwith and space. Thats all I can say now.

The host I use is webspacedepot.net (http://www.webspacedepot.net/index.html). I've only been with them for 3 weeks, but everything's been good so far. The hosting plan I have is the Economy one which gives me 1000MB of space, 15GB of bandwidth/month, 50 email accounts, etc. for $10/month which I'm very happy with. My site is mostly a download site with downloads for the PC game The Sims. Most of the downloads are 20kb-1MB in size, which is smaller than MP3's, but I have over 400 downloads and I get a good amount of traffic coming in and downloading almost everything, and for the 3 weeks my site has been up @ webspacedepot.net I've only used 500MB of bandwidth. Their biggest hosting plan is $20/month for 2000MB of space, 25GB of bandwidth, 100 email accounts, etc.

100GB bandwidth and 5GB space is a lot and probably way more than you'll need. If that is really what you want, expect to pay a lot for it.

Hey Milkymoon7896

Thank you so much for letting me know 'bout Active WebHosting!!! You're AWESOME!!! You are saying that the website offers "unlimited space"...The people on here are saying that there is no such thing as "unlimited"...Can someone clear this up for me? I'm confused...

And also; It doesn't say how much bandwith you get a month over @ Active WebHosting! Do ya know how much bandwith you get a month??? Cause some website hosts advertise w/ a very high amount of space and very lil bandwith...And since my site is gonna be a multimedia site, I need quite a lot of bandwith!!! So I really hope that you have the time to reply to my question :)

10 dollars a month is not much at all if you actually get "unlimited space"...What do you all think about this???

Thanks for letting me know! I really appreciate that :D You rock! And thanks a bunch for the well wishes! That means a lot to me.

Hi Alcy

Oh My Gosh...Thank you *soooooooooo* much for posting all those hosts :) *hugs* You are truly amazing!!! I really, really appreciate that and it means a lot to me! I'll check 'em all out, and hopefully one of them will be great for my multimedia site :D Weee! You're so nice and helpful, and I just want you to know that it's greatly appreciated!!! You are the best! YAY Thanks for taking the time to help me out!

Just a question about resellers - Is a reseller a host where you can buy more space/bandwith as you need it? Say you start out having a website w/ 500 MB of space and 1 GB of bandwith, and then you need more and ya can just buy say another GB of bandwith and another 100 MB of space for say $50??? Is that a reseller??? I'm sorry for asking so much, but I'm all new at this - So I just wanna make sure that I got it right!!! *hehehe*

Lemme know, will ya! Thanks for everything!!! You're incredible.

It doesnt exist, its just something some hosts say to lure the less domain/host savvy people into buying from them, if unlimited actually existed then the company would be out of business within a week! If you read the small print it'll usually say that they can and will suspend your account if they think you are useing too much....but they dont specify how much is 'too much' so you could find your site closed after useing 20mb space and half a gig of bandwidth etc
Most people (including me) would definatly reccomend avoiding hosts that offer unlimited space/bandwidth!

A reseller plan is basically like any other hosting plan with a few exceptions.

You can give or sell space and bandwidth with a reseller plan to any one you want. Plus it comes with a Web Host Manager that regular hosting plans doesn't. Many hosts let you host unlimited domains on reseller plans and just comes with more space and bandwidth.

As for adding space and bandwidth, you can add them anytime you have a need, regardless of whether you're on a regular plan or a reseller plan.

I hope that helps a bit. :)

Thank you so much for replying to all my questions :D I just can't believe how much you're helping me out here!!! Weee! You're the best! I really appreciated you explaining the stuff I was wondering about!!! You're AWESOME! I don't know much about space and bandwith, so I really appreciate you helping me out w/ this. Thanks bunches!

Thank you so much for wishing me the best of luck!!! I really, really appreciate that - Cause I really hope to get my multimedia website up and running sometime soon! Can't hardly wait.

Ooo - And thanks for clearing up that 1 GB is 1000 MB. That means a lot to me, cause it's really important to know when you're gonna buy a domain!!!

Hi Buffy22

Thanks a bunch for telling me a lil about the host ya use :) That's of great help to me! I appreciate you all letting me know 'bout different hosts so that I can compare the plans they offer!!!

Thanks for letting me know a lil about what it's like to have a download site! I really love getting advice for other people who're into domain/website stuff :D

So you've only used 500 MB of bandwith for the past three weeks! Wow...About how many people visit your site daily?

Thanks for everything! You rock.

Thanks for everything! I really appreciate your point of view on this!!!

------

Hello starlet

Thank you so much for clearing up that it's actually no such thing as "unlimited space/bandwith"...Cause a bunch of hosts claim to offer just that, and I do not wish to be lured into buying a domain that barely has any space/bandwith at all when they claim that you'll actually get "unlimited space/bandwith"...So thanks a bunch, starlet!!! You're indcredible :D

Thanks for telling me to read the small print too...You're right again! It actually says that they will suspend your account if they think you are using "too much space/bandwith"...But it does NOT say what "too much" is...That totally suc*s, cause it's pretty vital what they think is "too much"!!!

So I take it that I shouldn't go for any "unlimited" plan at all, right???

Thanks for the advice! It's great to know what to avoid when you're all new at this domain stuff!!!

Thanks for taking the time to reply to my post!!! It means a whole lot to me :)

Also, sabrina, I must comment, but you are actually farily smart. Though, you didn't know much about this domain/hosting .. and so on stuff, you actually bothered to ask others who have some knowledge in this stuff. And on top of that, you commented on to what they told you. Makes you a good person. :) And like I said, Good luck.

I, unfortuatly, have become very stupid and don't ask such quistions anymore and make stupid mistakes that tons of other people have made.

Hi Shellie

Thank you so much for letting me know what a reseller plan is :D Does that mean that I can buy more space as my domain grows???

You say that one can give or sell space and bandwith with a reseller plan to anyone ya want. Does that mean that I can buy additional space in addition to the hosting plan I already pay for?

And what exactly is a Web Host Manager???

Ya say that reseller plans come with more space and bandwith. If I signed up for a reseller plan that offered 5 GB of space and 100 GB of bandwith - Does that mean that I could buy more space than that just cause it's a reseller plan?

And do you know WHO to contact if you're gonna buy more space/bandwith from the Web-Hosting-Company you sign up with?

You helped me out A LOT, so thanks a bunch for replying :) You're amazing!!! Thanks a ton!

Hi freakEgurl

Yeah - I really wanna learn more about domain-stuff, so I thought I'd ask you all some questions :D And I really appreciate you guys replying and being so nice and all!!! Wooohoooo! I can't believe how much you're helping me out!

Commenting on to what you all told me was the least thing I could do! You're of great help to me, and I love learning new stuff!!! So it's me who should thank you - Not the other way around! And just for the record; You are an awesome person as well!!! Just cause you're really nice helping out the people on here!!! You're so kind and helpful, and I really respect that!

Thanks again for the well wishes! Ahhh...I love this board!!! You're so cool, and you actually answer my questions! YAY

And if you're wondering about something - Don't hesitate to ask! I'm sure you already know everything there is to know though...*hehehe* I'm sure you won't be makin' any stupid mistakes any time soon!!! You seem to know a lot about website related stuff!!!
