View Full Version : Favorite Browser ProfBelen 06-23-2004, 08:50 PM What is your favorite browser? I like Mozilla Firefox! although IE is a close second. Tell me what you think and why! MaGiCSuN 06-23-2004, 08:53 PM IE used netscape (no comment) before... AOL (pain in the ....) and we use opera wich is allright for the time i spend at school :P I'm an IE all person ;) Shirl 06-23-2004, 08:54 PM I have AOL, which is good for its features, but my favorite browser is IE. ProfBelen 06-23-2004, 08:58 PM AOL is so cheesy ! it drives me crazy! it should have died a long time ago. Ive heard opera was nice but you have to pay for it so i dont use it. Mozilla is free! lefty 06-23-2004, 09:38 PM I use Opera ;) sebluver 06-23-2004, 09:38 PM Firefox, of course. What else? neonick5647 06-23-2004, 09:51 PM IE all the way! Lissa 06-23-2004, 10:52 PM Mozilla Firefox. It's free, and I generally get way less spyware programs while using it to browse other Web sites. Cherchezlafemme 06-23-2004, 11:04 PM Firefox, of course. What else? IE  kittycat 06-23-2004, 11:40 PM Firefox, I <3 being able to block ads, and all the other fun stuff that comes with it :) Combat Babe 06-23-2004, 11:49 PM I use IE. Have AOL for email. It has good features, but is really annoying and bothersome at times. IE's alright, though I still don't really like it. I used to have a pop-up blocker, which made it cool (I get alot of pop-ups), but now it's gone, so the popups came back. :crying: sisqoluv 06-24-2004, 12:25 AM IE comes first. I don't know why. I guess because it's much better than Netscape, lol. AOL is next in line. The only thing I can create my zine on besides CompuServe (and I don't like that ISP). stargrl329 06-24-2004, 02:21 AM Definitely Firefox. It blocks popups and most spyware. Plus it's CSS2 compliant -- IE is just too buggy for me to design in. ;) Dude128 06-24-2004, 03:54 AM I [heart] my Netscape :P I love tabs. they rock. westernrider 06-24-2004, 04:01 AM lol :D I would have to say IE because it is the only thing I have ever really used The only reason I would dislike netscape is because it is so buggy on the school computers. Dude128 06-24-2004, 04:07 AM The only reason I would dislike netscape is because it is so buggy on the school computers. school computers are never the best way to judge stuff. based solely on my experience with school computers, I could say that I hate IE, Netscape, every Microsoft product, every Adobe product, and every piece of educational software my school happens to own, because they're all slow. in reality some of it is bad software, but it's all slow because my school's old computers are garbage :P they weren't even brand new when they got them- they weren't used, but they bought them in 1998 even though they were manufactured in like 1995 because they got a good deal on them from IBM... ProfBelen 06-24-2004, 04:09 AM lol :D I would have to say IE because it is the only thing I have ever really used The only reason I would dislike netscape is because it is so buggy on the school computers. Have you tried Firefox? even thought Mozilla=Netscape, Mozilla is a lot better because its open-end. Its also free. IE is kinda like the notepad of browsers. It has its uses. westernrider 06-24-2004, 04:10 AM Thats why I said "the only reason" because that is the only time I have ever tried it :P I am sure all browsers have some of their own good qualities. Yeah... all of the school computers are really bad... we have thoes colorful macs that came out in 1999... I think around then... add that with crappy software? you get one slow piece junk. ProfBelen 06-24-2004, 04:12 AM school computers are never the best way to judge stuff. based solely on my experience with school computers, I could say that I hate IE, Netscape, every Microsoft product, every Adobe product, and every piece of educational software my school happens to own, because they're all slow. in reality some of it is bad software, but it's all slow because my school's old computers are garbage :P they weren't even brand new when they got them- they weren't used, but they bought them in 1998 even though they were manufactured in like 1995 because they got a good deal on them from IBM... Dang...1995 comps. Do they still run DOS? jkjkjk! that pretty slow though(i rhymed!) Dude128 06-24-2004, 04:30 AM they have the state-of-the-art operating system Windows 95, with blazing fast 400 MHz (I think) Pentium II processors, a load- 64 MB- of RAM, and whopping 4 GB hard drives (but that's probably just because very little is actually stored on individual machines, just programs, and all data goes on the server's massive 20 GB drive :P (yes, my school has 3100 students and 150+ faculty, and the server has a 20 GB hard drive. sad, I know). that's why the main admin person always got slightly annoyed at the school paper- at any given time while all the content for an upcoming issue is sitting in the account, we can have like 800 MB of random stuff, which in relation to a 20 GB drive and to all other student or faculty accounts is a LOT of stuff... lefty 06-24-2004, 04:35 AM IE is kinda like the notepad of browsers. It has its uses. Good point. There's also a bunch of websites that are only viewable in IE, so that's the only reason I keep it around :P westernrider 06-24-2004, 04:47 AM they have the state-of-the-art operating system Windows 95, with blazing fast 400 MHz (I think) Pentium II processors, a load- 64 MB- of RAM, and whopping 4 GB hard drives (but that's probably just because very little is actually stored on individual machines, just programs, and all data goes on the server's massive 20 GB drive :P (yes, my school has 3100 students and 150+ faculty, and the server has a 20 GB hard drive. sad, I know). that's why the main admin person always got slightly annoyed at the school paper- at any given time while all the content for an upcoming issue is sitting in the account, we can have like 800 MB of random stuff, which in relation to a 20 GB drive and to all other student or faculty accounts is a LOT of stuff... :lolol: that is the best ;) well my school... students and faculty... know nothing about computers... so I do not think that we will get an upgrade on them until about 10 years pass... our dictionaries are so old they do not even have the word "computer" in it yet :D zetsubou 06-24-2004, 04:50 AM Firefox. Because I need the tabs. Neeeed. they have the state-of-the-art operating system Windows 95, with blazing fast 400 MHz (I think) Pentium II processors I've still got a Pentium (just Pentium, no II or anything) Win95 box sitting in my living room. It crashes opening Explorer. lefty 06-24-2004, 04:55 AM Randomly off-topic, but the laptop I was looking to buy (*cough* buthavenomoneyfor *cough*) has a Pentium M processor. M? I never even heard of that, and I want it :P westernrider 06-24-2004, 04:57 AM Randomly off-topic, but the laptop I was looking to buy (*cough* buthavenomoneyfor *cough*) has a Pentium M processor. M? I never even heard of that, and I want it :P maybe it is so super spiffy that they ran out of numbers so they just jumped through the alphabet to M... or maybe M stands for Marvelous or... money... I have had way too much chocolate milk tonight :buckt: lol... I haven't herd of it either ProfBelen 06-24-2004, 04:59 AM isnt M like the roman numeral for 1000 or 100? zetsubou 06-24-2004, 05:02 AM I thought Pentium-M just meant it was like the less powerful version for laptops. (And it's probably M for Mobile, since it's for laptops...) ProfBelen 06-24-2004, 05:07 AM I thought Pentium-M just meant it was like the less powerful version for laptops. (And it's probably M for Mobile, since it's for laptops...) doy! I bet your right! westernrider 06-24-2004, 05:08 AM I thought Pentium-M just meant it was like the less powerful version for laptops. (And it's probably M for Mobile, since it's for laptops...) much more of a briliant idea than I had :buckt:    lefty 06-24-2004, 05:14 AM Hmm, good point... Dude128 06-24-2004, 05:14 AM it's the Mobile version- I believe the main difference is that it uses less power to conserve on battery usage. I already picked out the laptop I want for college. AMD Athlon64 (64 bit that is :P because I'll probably have it for years, I want one that will work with future stuff), 1 GB of RAM, 80 GB hard drive, all sorts of good stuff :P and I have a 120 MHz Pentium system (with 16 MB of RAM and a 1 GB hard drive :P) that runs Windows 95 lying around- I haven't used it in ages though, although it does work and everything :P lefty 06-24-2004, 05:16 AM What kind of laptop is that? I've never seen one with 1GB of RAM :P ProfBelen 06-24-2004, 05:28 AM What kind of laptop is that? I've never seen one with 1GB of RAM :P Thats one expensive laptop Dude128 06-24-2004, 05:31 AM well I priced out both an HP and a Compaq... they're basically the same laptop because they're the same company :P you can get up to 2 GB of RAM in either- but just to upgrade to only one 1 GB stick of RAM instead of two 512 MB ones, it's like $450. so I'll stick to my 2x512's :P and the laptop was like $2,251 or something- for a 2.2 GHz AMD Athlon64 3400+, 1 GB of RAM, 80 GB hard drive, 64 MB video card, 802.11b/g wireless LAN with Bluetooth and integrated 56K modem, 5-in-1 memory card reader, 4x DVD+RW/CD-RW drive, and integrated floppy drive. I don't think it's a bad deal :P moises911 06-24-2004, 05:34 AM I use sbc yahoo browser, i have sbc yahoo dsl... i like it... anyone else have that browser? :( ProfBelen 06-24-2004, 05:49 AM I use sbc yahoo browser, i have sbc yahoo dsl... i like it... anyone else have that browser? :( hmmm...never even heard of it... duckgirl 06-24-2004, 08:21 AM --hey... I'm back!-- Well, I have to put my token mac user's two cents in here.... I like safari, the browser apple makes... at first I thought it was a pretty scant browser, but it has tabs and google toolbar search and popup blocker- those fun dandy things that make us love our browsers. Of course, for display, it basically shows the same thing as IE. It just makes it shiny and prettier. I used to use Opera, but it was rather buggy. Netscape just bugs me... it seems slower and cumbersome and ugly. I'm so superficial when it comes to computers :). ProfBelen 06-24-2004, 03:57 PM I'm so superficial when it comes to computers :). My mom's the same way  sebluver 06-24-2004, 04:54 PM HAH! I have all of you beat. We still have a Windows 3.1 (or some other 3._ number) downstairs. It still works, but it doesn't have the internet. ProfBelen 06-24-2004, 05:03 PM HAH! I have all of you beat. We still have a Windows 3.1 (or some other 3._ number) downstairs. It still works, but it doesn't have the internet. We admit defeat. I had 3.1 like 7 years ago! weird girl 06-24-2004, 05:03 PM I remember the days when I actually liked IE better, but the bugs soon got to me (and the fact that Microsft is conspiring against me- AOL is too but we won't get into that ;) ). I now use Mozilla, and absolutely love it! Pop-up blocker, tabbed browsing, and doesn't insert stupid gaps in various places! Good point. There's also a bunch of websites that are only viewable in IE, so that's the only reason I keep it around :P I usually click that handy x in the corner if a site is IE only... there are exceptions, but very few. I should not be forced to use some stupid Microsoft product :P (Unfortunately I have a Windows OS, but am extremely open to using other operating systems, because I hate MS that much ) ProfBelen 06-24-2004, 05:07 PM Whats wrong with MS? I think they make great products. I wouldn't survive school without MS Word and Powerpoint. Windows XP is a great op and IE is a very good browser, just a little basic and insecure. weird girl 06-24-2004, 08:52 PM You see, Microsoft is conspiring against me and is determined to make my life miserable. Bugs galore, viruses... they hate me. Fluffy2000 06-24-2004, 09:05 PM Whats wrong with MS? I think they make great products. I wouldn't survive school without MS Word and Powerpoint. There are open source applications that do the same thing...I use Open Office...I love it.... zetsubou 06-24-2004, 09:28 PM MS Word Clippy is the spawn of Satan. It still works, but it doesn't have the internet. Windows 95 was the first MS OS I'd ever used, so I never had Windows 3.1. I don't even think my parents were married then (wait, they were, because they got married in '86). I wasn't introduced to computers until I was..5 or 6. That's when we got the Windows 3.1 one. Offtopic, how cool is it that it's code name was Mr. T? ProfBelen 06-25-2004, 04:49 AM My dads been into computers ever since they came out! Ive always been around computers. I wish I could remember the specs on that one. evil_styrofoam 06-25-2004, 04:26 PM Id have to say IE since ive grown so used to it.i just got the google toolbar and its a great popup blocker. kittycat 06-25-2004, 04:40 PM We have computers and random fragments from computers everywhere... we got our first one, I must have been 11 or so? ('92) It was an 80s system running DOS 3.1. I wish I could remember the specs on that one. We got our first one around the same time, that thing was awesome :P It had the best games and stuff, I want it back :( We still have the computer somewhere and used it up until a few years ago, and the disk & CD drive are in another of our computers, we might take its mighty 2GB harddrive and stick it in one PC for a little backup space  lefty 06-25-2004, 05:01 PM CD drive? Ours used a 5 1/4 inch floppy  Our old PC definitely had tetris, because that's the only thing I played on it :P ProfBelen 06-25-2004, 05:47 PM We had a game on DOS that taught me my ABCs. It would show a letter and words that start with it, and then you would have to press the matching letter. kittycat 06-25-2004, 07:27 PM We had (still have) the big floppy too, the CD drive was an upgrade after we changed it to Windows 98 :P duckgirl 06-25-2004, 08:26 PM I did have a Mac Plus (http://apple-history.com/frames/body.php?page=gallery&model=plus) from 1986 sitting around, but it's been relocated to my dad's office. You did? We stil do have a MacPlus lying around. It works fine, and has lots of shareware games that I like to play (including a text-based adventure by Douglas Adams). It's kind of funny, since my hand can easily touch all corners of the screen. But it starts up so fast, and the programs - it has word on it - are soo small! This was before the days where Microsoft added Clippy and word art and all kinds of junk that you really don't need in a word processor; Word was easy to use! And it has stuff like MacPaint, a nice little program that was one of the first paint programs out there, I believe. It was my parents' first computer, and it was top of the line back then. Ah, how things change... Oh, but at my elementary school, we had typing games on Apple II's... those are from the 70's, I think... the screens had 8 colors, I think, and we used giant floppies... but those are the oldest computers I've ever used. ProfBelen 06-25-2004, 09:07 PM My dads used one of the ones as big as a room and the extent of its capibilities are adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing. :stickout: Thats old! lefty 06-25-2004, 09:17 PM Aww, a glorified calculator! ProfBelen 06-25-2004, 09:41 PM Yea, his company paid about $500 at the time for it! Combat Babe 06-26-2004, 01:17 AM This might be a bit off topic but y'all are talking about browsers and such, so... I said before that all I have is AOL and IE, and I don't like either. I noticed a lot of people seem to really like Mozilla Firefox, and I'm considering downloading it, but I'm not sure if I should, because I don't want to download something I won't use. So, I'm asking...what is it that's so great about Firefox, that makes you like it so much? I saw something about a pop-up blocker, and though I want one, I want to what else it has that makes it better than other browsers. sebluver 06-26-2004, 02:41 AM Some Firefox perks I enjoy: Downloads manager Much cooler design ;) Google search bar built in Extensions (things that can be added, anything from chatrooms to XHTML validators) Tabular browsing And one more thing is that if you type out a word that's in a link (version .9 has this, not sure about .8), such as previous in previous thread, it highlights the link for me. All I have to do is press enter and it'll go there. ProfBelen 06-26-2004, 04:40 AM Plus Firefox is a little faster! Just deleted the download if you dont want it, theres no cons to at least trying it. Its more secure than IE also. You wont want to delete after you dowload it! it great weird girl 06-26-2004, 07:15 AM Some Firefox perks I enjoy: Downloads manager Much cooler design ;) Google search bar built in Extensions (things that can be added, anything from chatrooms to XHTML validators) Tabular browsing And one more thing is that if you type out a word that's in a link (version .9 has this, not sure about .8), such as previous in previous thread, it highlights the link for me. I wish I could find a downloadable version; I can't ever find any to download ('cept Adventure <3), just Java applets (which are nice, except I don't think you can save...). Nice option to have, and will cut down your Adaware results if you use it right. * about:config - play with your user agent string like the Firesomething plugin does, block sending referrer headers so people can't see where you've come from, enable pipelining for even faster speeds... if you can't do it from the Preferences window, you can do it here. * themes - might be nice for some people; I don't use any since my XP theme covers that too, but still a nice option. * better CSS support * Adblock - the popup blocker's built-in; this is an extension, but I think it still warrants mention. You can right-click and block a certain image, or set a filter to block everything coming from a certain place. Very handy. webgirl 06-26-2004, 07:41 PM I use IE verison 6 or 6.0 or w/e.
