Squidfingers (http://www.squidfingers.com/patterns/) has some beautiful premade patterns :)

Do a search for blending tutorials (http://www.google.ca/search?q=blending+tutorial&hl=en&lr=&ie=UTF-8&start=10&sa=N) -- you basically feather the edges and adjust the opacity/layer blend of the images. You can get the multicoloured background with a gradient ^_^ The little "stars" look like brushes.
