jpgs can't be transparent. To save a transparent image, save it in a format that actually supports it (gif, png, etc). For gif, just make sure it's either grayscale (go to Image > Mode > Grayscale) or indexed (Image > Mode > Indexed) and hit save. For png, hit save and uncheck Save Background Color when the box pops up.

But i dont think GIMP lets you save stuff to be GIF's, or does it?

Yes it does. Like zetsubou said, just go to image > mode >indexed. Then save the image as pickarandomfilename.gif

You might need to grab the LZW libraries (http://www2.arnes.si/~sopjsimo/gimp/old.html).
