I figured here would be the best place to post this thread. I have a couple questions on how to implement what I want to do to / with my site. While some of you may object to what it covers Please keep subject matter g-rated.
A non-working example of the current layout can be seen at No advertising, please read the rules - mind you, this is just so you can see the layout. No pages have been added except the forums, and the links are just random words to fill in the blanks.

Plans for the website to be hosted at See above should take the following form. I have the intention of implementing features which would support:

- User control panels
- User upload databases of writings, drawings, and pictures for display
- User profiles with picture, textual descriptions, locations, and the like
- IRC chat (likely by use of the jIRC client)
- Message boards
- Establish links to other g-rated please- Kept free from paid advertisement
- Homepages for users with subdomains.

As it presently stands, see above is presently:

- Hosted by Dreamhost.com (Will be changing, temperorary provider)
- Has 2,560 megabytes of data storage
- Has 64 gigabytes of monthly bandwidth
- Has unlimited MySQL databases
- Has an anoymous FTP server
- Able to host 15 full domains, and 75 subdomains.
- Able to forward and mirror an unlimited amount of domains.
- Able to customize DNS.
- Has PHP4 Support, a Full Unix shell, Crontab Access, Full CGI Access, Canned CGI scripts, Server Side Includes, and a CVS Repository.
- Has a Miva Merchant License
- Has an SSL Secure Server
- Has access to raw log files, data statistics, and is backed up daily.
- Able to support all types of video and audio streaming (realAudo/Quicktime/WMP)

The site be moving to Echo Corporate for hosting. Within a month, the site's host will provide it with:

- OC-192 Multi-homed connections
- 7200 megabytes of data storage
- 72 gigabytes of bandwidth per month
- Unlimited POP3 Accounts
- Unlimited Mailing Lists
- Unlimited FTP Accoutns
- Unlimited SQL Databases (Both MySQL/PostgreSQL)
- Unlimited eMail accounts (Webmail - Horde/NeoMail/SquirrelMail)
- Autoresponders
- Mail Forwarding
- Full CGI Access with Perl support, PHP4 Support, Server Side Includes
- ImageMagick
- Raw Data logs, Data Statistics, and Daily Backup
- MIME Types
- Static IP
- Has an SSL Secure Server
- SSL Certificate
- 24/7 support

I am currently trying to learn PHP, integration of SQL, and XML/XHTML. Let me tell you, it's not easy trying to find a book from the Library that covers PHP these days, they are far to expensive for most Libarary's budget :(

So my question is, what would be the best way to implement this all?

*shrug* it says you did it last, so I assumed you - I would like to know who did it anyway, and I can't get any help (since I'm asking for it) if the link isn't in there.. I don't know what to do or anything in regards to how I want to implement the stuff i have and blah.

edit:

Furthermore, whoever made that edit might as well go edit all the help posts by me.. because it all acknowledges the subject matter. Lissa hasn't said anything about it yet, so.. *shrug*

Subject matter is not g-rated, I'm the one who edited it further. None of the information you requested requires the information that was edited out and I consider that information irrelevant.

For what you want to accomplish, try using cgi scripts, there are plenty listed here:

http://cgi.resourceindex.com/Programs_and_Scripts/Perl/

If you prefer php scripts, this is the place to look:

I want to do something similar to what geocities has with the "- Homepages for users with subdomains at subdomain.mysite.com" part.. any idea how I would implement that? Someone said that there probably is a system or somethign to autocreate subdomains and such.. and all that stuff, is there?

Hi Obsideus,

What you are wanting to build is called "virtual communities." You'll need to know PHP or PERL/CGI in order to build one. I know there are some scripts at:

http://www.scriptsearch.com or
http://www.hotscripts.com

Good luck!

Lissa - question.. how much Bandwidth does this site take up a month and how much datastorage do you have / use? If you don't mind..
