god, does that mean I sent someone a VIRUS????? if the server was trying to email that to one person, surely it would to another.

you should never open those emails in the first place. Failure mails or "deamon" mails etc that tell you the email coudln't be sent normally have an icon in front of them from hotmail.com or something, wich tells you they are straight from hotmail. Anything else should be deleted immidiately, because they are just spam or could be a virus

**insert huge sigh of relief here**

I'm glad to find that I'm not the only one that keeps getting Mailer Daemon emails saying that stuff was trying to be sent to email addresses I've never heard of. I thought people were hacking into my Hotmail account or something. Kind of creepy. And just really strange spam.

the attachment "message.zip" is a known virus. It isn't spam, it is infected people who have your name in their address book, it sends itself automatically and changes the "from" header to something random.

yes, but why would I be in their adress book? I've never heard of them. ever. their email doesn't look like I'd have met them online somewhere, and I checked all my forum members email adresses, the adresses of a lot of people here, etc.

these new virusses are smart. They have very clever ways of obtaining your email address and they not only use it to send you virusses, but also name you as the sender when they send the virus to other people.
So it could very well be that they got a virus sent to them by your address, but that does not mean your puter has a virus, or that it was sent from your computer.

whoah. thanks ppl. i got one too. it said it failed to receive mail going to this person i never knew. i was bored, so i researched the name... turns out it was a teacher from the 'international school of hong kong'... (ooh. that is a really prestigious school) strange lol. thankfully hotmail deleted the message.zip and i couldn't find it.

PS: how does this work? i get e-mails not even addressed to me. i checked one (yeah, im stupid), and it was sent to jayjay_123 or something like that. my e-mail looks somewhat like tha, but not entirely... weird...

I don't have time to read through all the posts, so I'm sorry if this was already said:

Either you or someone with your email address somewhere on their computer (address book, for example) has that virus or worm. It collects email addresses and makes it appear as if it came from a place it didn't (however, you can check the headers and see it didn't really come from you). Scan your computer for the worm. If you don't have the worm, someone else does. The first time I scanned my computer I did have the worm. About a week later I recieved another email in the like, I scanned my computer for the same worm, and it was clean. I'm not on the screen name where all my bookmarks are, but do a search on the web for HOUSECALL if you don't have a virus scanner. It's free.

If you are sure the address is from your email provieder, it could have been sent by mistake. However it could easily be spam or a virus! Maybe you should look into finding an address of theirs, and email them to see what everything is about (mistake, true problem with sending, spam, etc!)
