Out of interest if you are banned from a site with htaccess what would you see when you try to access it? A 404? Permission denied page? or an actual message that somehow says 'youve been banned'?

It actually varies, ive tested it on someone, despite there ARE ways to get around it, and he got a 404 error, others ive known have gotton permission denied sites(ive seen it before too on pw protected sites) , but ive never seen the third one unless there was a way to customize it ;/

The only reason i ask, ive never really thought about it before but i guess i just assumed it would be a 404 or permission denied, but i blocked someone from my site the other day and they sent me an email asking why i had done it....which made me wonder how they knew.

I know for my site, they'd get an "access denied" error.
