I'm just curious, alot of you are saying that Gimp is pretty good. My question is - what all can it do? I mean, I make alot of avatars, and signature icons. So, I want to know if it has any features like that of PSP? I don't have Paintshop, but have used the trial version acouple of years ago. And would it be worth it if I were to download it?

Apparently, it can do all the things PSP can, and more. I heard that somewhere, but Im not sure if its true. Free programs can be "iffy", but sometimes you stumble on some good ones.

Hope this sort of answers you question!

The GIMP (http://gimp.org) is pretty much a free, open-source PSP (roughly on par with PSP, I'd say, though it's usually labeled a Photoshop clone), though the 2.0 release adds SVG to the mix, perhaps making Fireworks a better comparison. (Though I personally would rather stick with 1.x and just use Sodipodi or something for SVG.)

X.x You've just offically confused me. I looked at the site - and cannot figure out which one to download. I have windows - but when I went down to the Windows downlaod part...I see one for German, and acouple of others - but not english. So, I can't figure out which one to download. Any suggestions?

Heh, sorry.

GIMP 2.0 and GTK 2.2.4 (http://www2.arnes.si/~sopjsimo/gimp/stable.html) - download this version if you want something like Fireworks that has SVG capability

GIMP 1.2.5 and GTK 1.3.0 (http://www2.arnes.si/~sopjsimo/gimp/old.html) - download this version if you just want something like PSP, without SVG (I use this one [and Sodipodi (http://sodipodi.org) for SVG], but perhaps I'm just lazy and used to this version's layout)

Keep in mind that GTK and the GIMP are two different things, but you do need to download both, I think.

would be easier maybe if you explained some of the stuff you talked about in your previous post :) like SVG etc :)

Ah, right, sorry!

SVG = scalable vector graphics. Vector graphics are the kind you see in Flash movies. It's all about paths and lines and curves, very different from raster graphics (what you're probably used to - the photograph kind of graphic you'd save in a jpg or gif or whatever, where you paint stuff onto an image).

There are Wikipedia articles that are more indepth:
vector graphics (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vector_graphics)
raster graphics (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Raster_graphics)

Only other thing I can think of that might need explaining the GTK+, which is just the GIMP toolkit that makes up the graphical user interface (the buttons and windows and things you see in a program).

Is that better..?
