What is it & what does it stand for?

File Transfer Protocol = FTP

FTP is used to upload stuff to your site directly from your desktop so that you don't have to go to your site and upload it from there. For example, I'm currently hosted at Brinkster so I go there to upload my files... With an FTP program you can upload it without opening Internet Explorer (or whatever web browser you have).
