How would I convert a bitmap file to say a jpg or a gif file? Or is that even possible?

I'm not sure if there is a program for that or not. But you could download a free trial of Paint Shop Pro (http://www.jasc.com/products/?) and convert them with that.

I assume you're in Paint...

Open the file, then click Save As, Save as Type: JPEG/GIF
