I do believe that the .htaccess file is the only way to block someone's IP address from your site.

Does that mean i'll have to buy a domain name or will it work on freewebs?

Am i right in thinking it's just a note pad document with the deny from thing in?

For the most part, it is a notepad document with the block thingie inside of it. And I don't think it's just the domain name that you'd have to buy, but the webspace itself that you have to buy, because the web server has to support it, and I don't think that freewebs supports the .htaccess document.

Is there a certain thing that a web server has to allow to allow the use of the ht.access file?

The certain thing that the webserver has to allow is the .htaccess file.

some hosts allow it, some don't :) most don't however, but might be that there are a few that do allow it.

An alternative could be getting hosted :) in this way you can use the same things as the owner of the domain, you are hosted for free and no ads :) (atleast if the owner of the domain paid for the right package offcourse :P )

Are you with a free hosting?

Does anyone know if Geocities supports the htaccess file? I'm also looking into banning an IP address. Your help would be appricated.

try www.pick-me.net or browse through several domains. They often have a "hosting" subpage where you can fill in a form to apply for getting hosted on that certain domain. :)
