Geocities is a host. If you are using Geocities as a host, you don't need to find another one unless you are looking to switch. Different hosts offer different features, so it is all based on what you like and need.

people usually like to get hosted so that they can use php, mysql, maybe a database..all the stuff geocities won't support.

also on geocities you can only upload picture files, so if you want to upload an mp3 or wav file you have to find a new host.

Plus even though geocities gives you 15mb of space, once you start getting close to around 5mb they send you neomails saying you have exceeded your bandwith.

I personally use geocities only to display me stuff and upload everything at ripway.com which is free and lets you upload anything.

You can have other stuff besides images on there. If you're just doing the basic stuff then Geocities should be all you need (stress on basic).

if you can only have images on geocities.com then how come people have whole website's on it?

lol basically, that's just nonsense :) it just depends what you use. And bandwidth has nothing to do with space btw... if you have 1mb that get's visited allot you can even go through your bandwidth like that. It has nothing related to each other

either way geocities sucks....

bascially people get hosted so they can use CGI, PHP, etc, and have more space, no ads, faster loading times, FTP, and more options for file types and operations.

well compared to other hosts, geocities is doing okay. saying it sucks is going a little far.

it really works okay for me. It's free and supports ssi. All i need for a fanlisting :P

also geocities has ftp (uk version does) and faster loading time can also be done at a free host basically :P just don't put up 10 javascripts on one page

Yeah I have to agree. I'm using geocities, and I'm quite pleased with it. One day I will probably get a different host though when I want to move on to the more advanced stuff.

yeah, sucks is a little strong. angelfire REALLY sucks, but geocities is ok. I had some bad experiences, but that's because i was trying to install PHP stuff, and they can't have that. But yeah, it's pretty good, unless you have really small iframes

yep i like geocities :) but i can never put music on it [even when the files are .rm] because my site always ends up exceeding the bandwidth limits after like one visit. but mirna said bandwidth has nothing to do with size. so i'm confused :D but that's okay. geocities is fine with me. unless someone else is offering to host, of course ;)

pm me:lol:

she was replying to that person who said they give you 15mb but when you get close to 5mb they send you emails....well bandwith does depend on the size of the files you have but sites can have 10mb of stuff but it's not all used at once. If you have ONE huge file, it's going to take up a lot of bandwith(transfers between webpage and your computer)

It's hard for me to explain....

oooooooooh. i get it now. well not completely, but i understand more of what she was talking about! thank you!

I know what it is but it's hard for me to explain certain things but i found this:

That probably makes more sense!!

that explained it really well. i'm just wondering, what are ISPs and domain provider services? who runs it all? how does the internet work?!!? haha sorry my questions aren't very specific. but as of now, i know about as much about the internet as i do about the universe :D

whenever i think about those questions, i start thinking about the oooold "ghostwriter" shows. i loved it when they showed ghostwriter going through the modem and locating people in a chatroom/ board type thing. like mad max! haha i'm sure no one knows what i'm talking about. but it was very cool :)

what are ISPs?
Internet Service Providers. your connection service to the internet.

domain provider services?
business services that will sell you a domain name.

who runs it all?
aliens :D
actually it started with the armed forces, moved into universities, and is now a household item. there is no specific group that runs the whole show.

how does the internet work?
turn on the computer and click on your connection.
i can go into a really technical explaination, but essentially, the term internet stands for... INTERconnected NETwork which means a bunch of computers plugged into each other around the world. some of these computers are turned on 24/7 and have special software loaded so they can "host" webpages on them, and so forth and so on...

well yes yes i understand the basic definitions of it all [thank you for that though, very informative!] but.. its just so weird. who started the internet? how did it get started? how is everyone connected to everyone else? is it like the telephone connections? sorry i'm being very stupid. and annoying. :buckt:

well, telephone lines are one of the most common ways of getting connected to the Internet, yes. people that have dial-up use their phone line as a connection to their ISP, which then has heftier data cables that connect to everything else. it's the big network of telephone connections, those massive data cables, and every other means of connection that essentially is the Internet- they all connect a whole lot of computers that run the show.

I don't know exactly how it was started, but I would imagine it probably came out of the idea behind Local Area Networks (LANs). for a while now people have been able to connect multiple computers together so that data could be exchanged, and someone probably got the idea of using telephone lines to connect multiple computers so that computers in different locations could be connected, and it probably sprung from there...

Yep. I'm one of the people who run the Internet! :lolol:
I learned a little bit about the Internet and stuff in my computer class but remember none of it. I do remeber that it started out as a military project though.
