View Full Version : Coloured Framey Things

I'm working on my site layout as we speak, and I thought of a site I'd seen once that I found quite cool. It had a frame-esque thing (done in Java, I do believe) and you could see the outline of it. I've spent quite some time trying to figure out how to do this... Anyone care to help me out a bit?

Oh, and I realised that it's a bad explination, so I'll show you an example...

You can do that using CSS or frames, and put borders around each section.

Yeah, I tried looking at those pages before I even posted here, but I can't figure out how to make it work right... I've done everything that I can think of, but it never manages to work! My god, I sometimes wonder how I manage to work in a computer field... LOL

And, yeah, *pride* I was partially right about that one site being done in Java (though it also used HTML -and- CSS). Yay for source code.

Well, if it wasn't working right, you could have always come here to get help on it.

Also, if you wanted to avoid using Java, you could use SSI or PHP includes to achieve that effect.

*confused* But I did come here for help?

Yes, but what I meant was...

Yeah, I tried looking at those pages before I even posted here, but I can't figure out how to make it work right... I've done everything that I can think of, but it never manages to work!

Why didn't you come here before for help when you couldn't figure those out? Sorry for the misunderstanding. :)

Oooh, yeah, that's when I came here. lol I was so mad and confused and crap and then I saw "forum" on the page and I was like "Weeeelll, lookie here! Maybe I can get some help..." and then I posted it on here. So, yeah, did that make sense?

if you still got the codes you have worked with or the page you have worked with somewhere online then post it here so we can take a look at it ;)
when something doesn't works out right never delete it, but save it because it can help us to solve your problem :)

Love,
Mirna

Here (http://www.geekliness.net/indexhtml.txt) is my source code in .txt form (just to add to the ease). Yeah, as you can see the change I want is a pretty big jump from what I have now (I'm all into simplicity and crap, but I've figured that it's finally time for a change into something a bit nicer looking). :D

I clicked the link and it gave me the same page as just typing in http://www.geekliness.net [Or is it supposed to take me to that?] I viewed the source on that, and don't see anything wrong. Is there something specific you want to do with your index page?

Hm... Yeah, it took me to a .txt file. SO whatever. Anyway, I wanna do what I showed in the original post (unless you didn't click on the link thing and didn't see the sad Paint drawing I did of it).

Oh. Maybe it's just my browser or something.

Anyway, do you want to do it using frames, CSS, includes, tables, something else I might be forgetting..? :D I mean, there isn't just one set way about making a layout in that set up.

geekliness

I'd prefer to do it in tables, actually. And CSS would be my next choice. I'm a tableaholic and so those would probably be easiest for me, yanno?

Alrighty, tables. Fun. ^.^

<table>
<tr><td>stuff</td></tr>
<tr><td>more stuff</td></tr>
<tr><td>even more stuff</td></tr>
</table>

That is probably the most basic set up for that page. Forgive me, for I am not good with tables at all.

I know that you said you're good with tables, so, you probably know all the positioning and cellpadding and stuff that I don't know, but just as a reference point...

...and I'm sorry that I can't be much more help than that, but there are tons of people in the Tables section of the forum that would be more than happy to help you if you get stuck. Good luck with your layout. :)

from your original picture and your likeness for tables, would this do?

<table width="80%" bordercolor="green" border="1"><tr><td>
header stuff here
</td></tr><tr><td>
navigation stuff here
</td></tr><tr><td>
body stuff here.
probably an iframe.
</td></tr><tr><td>
bottom space here
</td></tr></table>

Yup, so, I'm done. I should probably do more or something to it, but I think it looks fine now. Any suggestions?

No advertising, please

I think it looks good, but you're advertising, and that's against the forum rules, just to let you know.

Am I? I didn't think of it as advertising... Just wanted to show the finished work. lol Okie dokie I'll take it down. o.o;;

...Or not... Can you not edit old topics?

bourdelson

By asking people to look at your site, that's advertising.

You can only have five minutes to edit a post before the option is gone.
