Today is a good day :D
Fourteen years ago, I had this friend back in England, we were flatmates at the time, and she was a real real good friend. I'll give you an example:

I was 20 at the time, and I worked at Heathrow airport as a security agent. Because of my job, I had a pass that allowed me to go pretty much anywhere on the airport, but because of security issues, I had to provide my employer with a copy of my criminal record (if you had anything on your criminal record, you couldn't work for them). So I went to the police station to fill out a form that would ensure my employer got a copy of my criminal record. After filling out the form and paying for it, the police always paid you a visit, and never announced when, but usually within 4 weeks or so.
I forgot all about it, and about 3 weeks after filling out that form, I managed to get 4 days off in a row, so I booked a ticket to Holland to go see my family. Because it was a spurr of the moment sort of decision, I left a note for my flatmate, telling her I had gone to Holland unexpectedly, and would be back on tuesday.
She got home, read my note, and thought nothing of it, until the police knocked on the door. There were three police officers, asking for me. I had failed to tell her they were supposed to check on me sometime.
So she figured I must be in trouble, and told them she didn't know where I was, or when I'd be back. So she lied twice to the police to cover for me.
She didn't need to do that, but how was she to know.

Anyway, later that year I left England, she stayed for another year but moved about all the time, I lived in Holland but was also moving about all the time. Internet and email didn't exist yet, so we lost track of one another.
But you don't just lose track of a friend that lies to the police for you, right?
So I was looking for her for ages, not even knowing which country to look in, and today I found her parents, and called them, and they gave me her number, and I called her and it was so cool to talk again, I never thought I would find her. I'm so happy :-D

Fourteen years ago, she gave me the phone number and address of her parents, because we were at an age where you tend to move a lot, but parents usually don't move about that much, and I found my old address book some years ago, but the phone number was no longer in use, so I assumed her family had moved.
Just in case, I wrote a letter to that address (not putting any name, just the address), asking if they were her family etc. etc.
The letter came back 'undeliverable' and had not even been opened.

Today I was looking into a phonebook of Ireland, in that area, and looked up every single one with that surname (LOTS of people), and found there was actually someone by that name living on that address, so I called them and it was her mum answering, and she gave me my friend's phone number.
I had tried to find out if someone still lived there through that phonebook before, and I have no idea why I didn't find them then, but I'm glad I did find them today.
I do hope we'll stay in touch from now on. I know I'll give it my best shot, that's for sure!

(could've sworn I replied to this....)

That's very cool Marianne! A girl from my old elementary school who moved about 7/8 yrs ago I found out moved back to this area when she turned out to be in my French class this year. I heard her name and thought "hey, I know her from somewhere!" but couldn't remember where from until later on that day :P

I'm happy for you, Marianne.

Speaking of finding friends, my mom used to genealogy (sp?) and while she was doing that she found her sister, uncle, step-parents, and her cousin (if there was more, I would tell you, but that's all I know.)

if you want to find old friends, the sooner you start, the more likely you are to succeed.
For example, when this friend and me parted company, she gave me the address and phone number of her parents and I gave her the address and number of mine.
But mine moved 4 years ago. Hers dind't move, but their phone number changed. If I had left it for another couple of years, perhaps her parents would have moved too.
In adulthood, people also tend to get married, and some women start using their husband's name from then on, making it more complicated.
So my advise: try to locate them TODAY if they mean a lot to you :)
