OK, I'm in 8th grade, so they're starting us planning next year's schedules and stuff.

My mom wants me to be in all AP classes, which I could do (except for Algebra:P). But my teacher, who's daughter is already in 9th grade, doesn't recommend doing this. I don't really know if I want to, either, but my mom really really wants me to.

Then there's the electives. I'm taking Spanish II, maybe Spanish II AP. But I need 2 more and 2 alternates, and there are NO others that I want to be in! They won't let us in Web Mastering till our sophomore year...

So I just thought I'd rant about how odd this is... Maybe odd's not the word, I dunno.

*frowns* I've never heard of freshman being aloud to take ALL AP classes if any at all. Spanish II AP? Where I go to school you have to have Spanish I, II and III before taking AP spanish. Weird. I'm a sophmore and I just have honors classes. I would DEFINANTLY NOT take all AP classes. You'll burn yourself out really fast and end up hating school. You'll just overwhelm yourself. Why not pick your two favorite subjects and take the AP versions of those classes? Or your a few of your best subjects.

I dont recommend taking all APs right now. You'll drive yourself nuts with them. They require a lot of work and time from you. Since youre going into 9th grade, see if you are able to take Honor classes. Those are much lighter than AP classes. And when you do decide to take an AP class, pick one that you will like, so it wont be so stressing.

My school doesn't offer "Honors", just AP.

I decided I'm definitely not taking Spanish 2 AP, just Spanish 2, and I might take Biology instead of Biology AP...

But the counselor person from the highschool said that if you have 90s in all of your classes, you could probably handle all AP. This year I'm in all Pre AP execpt math is Pre Algebra and I'm in a regular English. And most of my friends are taking all AP AND band, which is pretty extracurricular (sp?).

Here's what I'm thinking right now, but this could change any time:
English AP
Biology AP
Algebra 1
Career Connections (what is this? it's required...)
World Geography AP
Spanish 2
Theater Arts
Intro to Video Tech

Hmm. That doesn't look TOO bad...

I would take band but I hate the directors. :P And I get to keep my flute, so I can still play. And I'm learning piano.

We don't have to take PE yet, but I need 1 1/2 PE credits. Phooey on the PE.

is it your mom that goes to school or you? ;) You are the one that has to do this, not your mom... do what you want to do, and what you are able to do.

I'm taking ONE AP class this year (and a bunch of accelerated stuff...) and I find it a bit much. It's a good class, but it's a LOT of writing, especially in Social Studies classes. There's a big difference between AP and regular classes.

My school doesn't allow freshmen to take AP classes, and there are only two AP classes open to sophomores: AP Environmental Science and AP European History.

Maybe my school is strange, but it doesn't seem to have that many AP classes, just accelerated, except for in Social Studies (AP European and American Histories). Until you're a senior. Then, there are a billion AP science options, AP English, AP Art history, AP Art, stuff...

There's no point in killing yourself so you can look good on college applications. You find that out the hard way.

hmm....what's AP equivalent to in the Canadian curriculem is it like academic instead of applied or is it something different. About you having to take gym, can't you put that as your alternative, you'll be better off if you get rid of it now- in most schools if you wait till grade 10 you'll be with a lot of grade 9s-and well the age difference doesn't matter but you'll have a less of a chance to be with a lot of your friends that you know and if you don't like it much or are really bad at it its better that you get rid of it asap because of your marks.

I didn't realize this until they gave us these booklets, but actually we don't have AP, it will be Pre-AP. But still, it might be too hard. If it is I can always drop out of some of them. :)

Advanced Program! Is that it? I don't think we have that at my school.. then again the REGULAR classes at my school are advanced enough........

AP stands for Advanced Placement. I think that it is a good idea to take a few of these "Pre - AP" classes so that you can see what AP is really all about. As far as taking ALL AP classes, I wouldn't recommend it, unless you have no life and are super dee duper smart! j/k But seriously, it would be quite a stressful load. Also, I agree that you should do what you want and not what your mom wants as far as life choices that you make (yes, classes in the long run could be a life choice!)... They offer web design classes at your school?!?! No fair, I learned HTML in my keyboarding class on my own when my teacher wasn't looking!! :-P

My parents have no idea what I'm taking. I have a feeling they think I'm in all advanced classes, but my only advanced class is math :P My parents are cool like that though. They let me do anything I want, because they "trust me". :hehe:

Yeah, mine too, although my dad made me take this computer class, which I didn't wanna take. Computer turned out to be fun though!

Next year's course selection will be coming up soon for me, and I get to listen yet again to my dad's story of how I should take biology and be a pharmacist  I don't want to be a stupid helpful pharmacist lol, and I'd hate biology. Anyone can memorise things, that's why I'm staying away from it and doing the other two sciences where I can actually figure out stuff.
They also ask like 3894354 times for me to double check and make sure I'm in all the advanced classes, which they don't have to worry about because I'd never take the lower level ones, these are easy enough as it is...
Both parents also think I should take certain classes because that's what THEY took. For dad it's the biology thing and mum wants me to take accounting. No thanks. Neither will let me take Spanish because "it won't get me anywhere in life", it never occurs to them that maybe I want to take something just for fun.

Anyone whose parents aren't so strict about this stuff are lucky in a way, at least they may not be trying to force you into stuff you don't like or won't be successful in.

I stopped taking Spanish because I didn't like it, so I'm probably not the greatest person to hear this from, but a lot of people say that's it really good to know a second language- supposedly a lot of employers look for people that have a working knowledge of a language other than English, and you would probably be more valuable to them if they could use you to communicate with others, especially if that company does business internationally or something (can anyone say "job security"? :P)

Where I live, there are loads of people that speak Spanish, and I find it very handy figuring out what the janitors are saying about us behind our backs...

Of course if I didn't want to take it, by dad would probably force me to anyway. He took like 6 years of spanish, the regular four years and two where it's all oral, I guess. He's obsessed.

Hmm, I am so glad I live in England. The American school system sounds incredibly confusing to me. But then again that is most probably because I'm english :)

Do what you want to do and not what your mum wants. And if she really won't accept what your saying try to compromise. I'd prefer to be happy at school and have my mum just a little ticked off than hate school and have her pleased with me.

I don't want to take 4 years of spanish, but my mom and my guidance counselor are telling me to, I mean, it would only be another year, and it provides some additional weighting for my GPA, but I wanna do what I want! My friend's mom is only making her take 3 years, and my other friend's mom let her drop it after two years and then take Japanese. :(

You guys make me sound so stupid.

I'm in the stretch pace classes. The regular math class takes 2 years to complete. And the stretch pace takes 2 1/2 years. We Basicaly learn the same stuff just at a slower pace.

We also have Special Ed classes along with stretch. I'm not in any of the Special Ed classes though.

We also have no AP classes, just the regular ones.

I think IB is where you have to take these very advanced classes and maintain a certain (probably 3.5) grade point average. Do this and you have your choice of any college you want, all paid for.

Watch as I'm WAY off, lol.

At my school all we have for the super advanced ones is basically you get to skip a grade.

I thought IB was more similar to AP, where it's an advanced class and a national exam, that if you do well on, you can get college credit for- because I've seen IB information listed the same way as AP stuff in literature from colleges, so I think they're similar programs, but I don't think nearly as many schools do IB, at least not in my neck of the woods (because I think most high schools near me offer AP classes/exams, but not IB). if it was like that, I don't think you could have choice of any school, because not every school even participates in AP type programs, and to guarantee that somebody else would have to be paying- and that could get pretty expensive.

Owlie42

It's probably more AP over all than IB.
