I have a movie clip with some animations done with flash 5 and would like to make it work as a buttom.

open your library (control + L)
right-click on your movie clip
select 'behavior'
click on 'button'
that's all.

then you can set the actions for the button by right clicking on the button, going to "Actions" and setting it to whatevet you want to happen.
