View Full Version : URGENT: School Uniforms - for or against?
jessi15 01-22-2004, 07:20 PM Hey! I have to write a letter of opinion about school uniforms. I am for them, but either way I need facts which is why I am conducting this poll for those that are in HIGH SCHOOL AND MIDDLE SCHOOL ONLY (others can respond but please do not vote on the poll). The reason we have to do this is that my high school is considering implementing school uniforms next year. The reason I want high school and middle school is that my school goes from grades 7 to 11 (which is the last year of high school here), but if you are in grade 12 or whatever it's still ok.
When/if posting, please state the reason you are for or against (or divided).
kicker91 01-22-2004, 07:53 PM I think there are pros/cons for each. Some people think uniforms take away a students right to "creativeness, self-expression, and freedom." They help divide the cliques, even though nowadays there isn't a huge clique problem.
I am writing from the point-of-view of a 6th-grader living in the US. So...
lilmsunpopular 01-22-2004, 08:30 PM I personally am indifferent. I personally think that it might not stop the cliques. Kids might just wear jewelry, make-up, if it's allowed, to define cliques. And even if jewelry and make-up aren't allowed then kids will design their hair in a different way.
Lissa 01-22-2004, 08:49 PM I had to wear school uniforms in elementary school. I hated them (I'm wearing one in the picture on my site). I couldn't wait to go to a school that didn't require them. The kids at my school competed in other ways, like with $300.00 Gucci bags etc.
I think uniforms are a good idea because you don't have to worry about what to wear each day, and no one can make fun of you for what you wear. But the thing I don't like about about them is for the same reasons above. Sometimes I like to wear something different :P Yeah I'm not sure where I stand lol
kittycat 01-22-2004, 09:11 PM I'm against them. Uniforms will not solve problems of cliques etc based on clothing, there will still be other ways. There's also families that don't have/want to spend money on a uniform for their child(ren). And it must be boring walking into a school and everyone's wearing the exact same thing. In my opinion they're basically just a big thing into conforming people, and who wants that?
Cherchezlafemme 01-22-2004, 09:21 PM I'm against them, uniforms don't make people get "accepted" in crowds. If they weren't accepted in the first place i doubt they'll get accepted. And they stink most kids don't like uniforms, no they don't solve anyone's problems. What is so bad about cliques? I mean just b/c one person doesn't have any friends doesn't mean it'll be solved by clothes like i stated earlier.
Fish net shirts should not be sacrificed!!! :(
~x~karyn~x~ 01-22-2004, 10:03 PM I went to a school where we had to wear uniforms.
They don't help the stereotyping any, people just judge more. Plus, they take away your sense of individuality.
I could really go into this, but I have no desire to. Maybe later.
Neptune 01-22-2004, 10:39 PM I'm against them. Not only would it be boring, but I don't think it would really solve anything. Clothes aren't really the root of the problem, are they?
jessi15 01-22-2004, 10:57 PM I'm against them. Not only would it be boring, but I don't think it would really solve anything. Clothes aren't really the root of the problem, are they?
Actually clothes are a really big problem at our school.
weird girl 01-22-2004, 11:28 PM I go to a private school so I have to wear uniforms . I HATE THEM!!!! They don't help any. Yeah, you obviously can't be made fun of for your clothing, but people do make fun of others because of their shoes, or other reasons. And NOBODY looks good in uniforms! And people like me who are absolutely obsessed with being different can't be different in those things :(.
edit: Yahoo! 10 more posts till 100! And I'll be outta the little league!
starlet 01-22-2004, 11:33 PM I voted in the poll before reading the question, but then i edited it when i realised i shouldnt vote...just saying so no one thinks i was diddling the poll
Im for them though, i think it just makes life a whole lot easier on kids and parents...of course when i was AT school i hated having to wear a uniform :P Thing is though in the UK id say...98% of public schools have a uniform, its just not the done thing to not have one like it is in america!
kittycat 01-22-2004, 11:42 PM Actually clothes are a really big problem at our school.
Is it people being exclusive and bullying about others clothes? Or is it that people are wearing inappropriate clothing that's revealing or has inappropriate sayings kind of thing? If it's the latter a dress code could also be considered.
westernrider 01-23-2004, 12:15 AM I am glad we do not have uniforms... at school you want to be comfertible... it helps you think... but I know if I was in a skirt and blouse (sp?) I deffinetly would not be happy or comfertible... that is why I am against them.

Yeah, same here. But at least girls can wear pants (except on chapel day ... :() (and obviously boys can  ) Although there isn't much to choose from...
jessi15 01-23-2004, 12:38 AM Is it people being exclusive and bullying about others clothes? Or is it that people are wearing inappropriate clothing that's revealing or has inappropriate sayings kind of thing? If it's the latter a dress code could also be considered.
It is both. We do have a dress code, but it doesn't work. I know other schools have worse ones. Skirts and shorts need to be below your fingertips when your arms are at your sides, no spaghetti straps, halter tops, tube tops (unless you have something over them), no belly tops. Guys can't wear muscle tops. No baggy pants (like the ones tha the waist goes to your knees) And no bathing suits.
There are a lot of other clothes out there, but yet you always hear teachers saying, "Pull your pants up! Change that shirt!..." The uniforms we might get are more in style, not those scratchy wool ugly ones you see on tv and such. Girls could chose pants or skirts. The guys would be glad because the uniform wouldn't include ties.
Owlie42 01-23-2004, 01:07 AM I'm one of those people who despise skirts, and most of the girls' school uniforms around here consist of a collared (UGH!) shirt and a skirt.
I prefer the freedom to express myself through my clothing, thanks. :D
Neptune 01-23-2004, 01:45 AM If it's a real issue in your school, then go for it.
Football Bandit 01-23-2004, 02:01 AM Lol, do you live in Ohio?
I had to do the same thing, and I am correcting the narrative portion right now, but anyway.
Honestly, I have to wear a uniform, I don't find it that bad, Skirts are particularly nice, well... for guys at least.
kicker91 01-23-2004, 02:04 AM I read something that now in the US, if a public or private school requires uniforms, parents normally think the school is "unsafe."
Dude128 01-23-2004, 03:09 AM I attend a public school in New York State, and I'm in 12th grade.
I'm against school uniforms. unless the dress code is so strict that the entire wardrobe is controlled, down to what kind of shoes you can wear and bags you can have and stuff, having everyone wear the same shirt and pants isn't going to make "competition" among students go away. in addition to that, I think it's important for people to be able to dress how they want- as it is schools are trying to produce people that are exactly alike- in New York for instance, everyone has to pass the same state exams in order to graduate. you have little control of what you learn- the courses are required, and teachers teach to the test. I think taking away students' ability to select their clothing is a step closer to everyone being identical, without consideration of a particular person's interests or abilities (in terms of academics, at least). plus I just think it would be boring for me to be around 3,099 other people wearing the same thing as me every day :P and there's also the issue of money- it would simply cost more to have uniforms. if a family can't afford a uniform, the school would have to provide assistance, which means the burden is on the other taxpayers- and I know in my district at least, school taxes are already outrageous (this year there was a $7 MILLION increase in the budget from last year's $100 million).
i would lean towards the "for" catagory.
there are many ways to still express any "individuality" and "creativity".
and when it comes to... "oh oh, what am i going to wear today?"... well, that's pretty much taken care of every day.
most school uniforms look good in style as they come in some variances.
MaGiCSuN 01-23-2004, 01:41 PM i'm against it although i have never experienced anything like this to wear an uniform anyday
also i'm wondering why people do make issues of school uniforms and not for work uniforms :) they are basically the same :)
anywayz, i'm against.. because i know myself how difficult it is for some people to fit these standard clothes.. but beside that. I think you should have your own choice of choosing what you want to wear. I would hate to wear a skirt the whole year for example. And like several people allready said, it doesn't help to prevent cliques at school etc. If you are a brat, a school uniform won't change that and won't change the fact that you belong to the brat clique :P
cliques are always there, it's the way of life... why bother of that? if everybody would be the same the world would be a boring mess anyway ;)
I feel comfortable enough in uniform. It's not like I'm wearing a suit of armour or something, it's just clothes.
Right now I'm at work. It's my first week at this job and it was overlooked to tell me that people dress down on Friday's. It doesn't bother me. I'm wearing a shirt and tie and I look presentable. It's very different in schools though. If a kid forgets it's own-clothes day then they have ^^^^ all day as everyone laughs at them, lol. Well that's how it is over here *shrugs*
Neptune 01-23-2004, 06:17 PM Think people don't mind them for work because they can choose not to work there if they want. Or maybe the fact that it's one of those things you expect (wearing uniforms to work that is). With school the kid couldn't just say, "hey, I don't want to go here anymore."
bubblegummy 01-23-2004, 07:18 PM I go to a private school so I have to wear uniforms . I HATE THEM!!!! They don't help any.
I'm in the same situation as you. My uniform is brown, green and beige, which looks as bad as it sounds. Over in the USA and Canada, I've got the impression that most of your schools don't have a uniform. Here in the UK, I can hardly think of any school pupils (apart from sixth-formers) who are allowed to wear their own clothes. Basically, you have to lump it.
I'm actually for school uniform. I disagree that it encourages stereotyping. Like other people have said, even if people wear a school uniform there are millions of other ways they can express themselves through their accessories and all. Sure, some uniforms might not be the most attractive, but I think they're a good idea. My uniform looks terrible, but it means there's no bickering about other peoples' clothes like I can imagine would happen in non-uniform schools.

Right, in the US it's usually only private schools that have uniforms.
riles 01-23-2004, 08:08 PM I didn't ready any of this, I'm sure I'll have time later, but I'm trying to get things figured out for my site.
Against, freedom of expression, & individuality, i'm all for.
My school this year has a uniform, i don't mind it that much only because i'm very lazy and i'd rather just know what i'm wearing everyday, girls can wear pants if they want-i am so happy for that, and the rest who don't want to can wear kilts, but that doesnt stop people from rolling them up so you can practically see their underwear. The school tried to stop it by introducing these new ones with shorts inside-they are soo ugly and make anyone who wears it look like they're 10x their regular weight- i tried one on (even though i hate skirts-cause of its hot in summer) and it ended up reaching midway from my foot and my knee, so no ones buying them or getting the old ones off people who graduated. And the people who do, pay $60 for them and then another $60 to try to hem them and fix them up.
But uniforms don't separate cliques like you can tell what clique everyones in type thing, but i hang out with different cliques so it doesn't really effect me.
But about expressing individuality, we have once a month where we can do that, and wear our own clothes. But somedays i wish there wasn't a uniform because i want to wear my jeans. I love jeans, i can wear them everyday if i had to. And even with uniforms people wear their own sweaters and jackets n stuff.
bearyhappy 01-23-2004, 08:28 PM I am kinda for, right now I actually wear uniforms. They aren't the typical skirt w/ oxford shirt, but I have to wear khakies(or something of the like) and a collared shirt. On Fridays, you get to wear jeans and a "school tshirt" if you so wish(which everyone does). I really don't mind it all that much, I mean I don't like having to have my pants ironed or having most of my clothing be collared, but I don't really care. Next year, they are considering going to full uniform(skirt and oxford shirt) which I wouldn't have to switch to since I'll be a sr. and it wouldn't make sense for me to buy them for a year. If I did have to wear them, I wouldn't throw a fit, there are more things to get mad about.

Ours are supposed to be navy (as school colors are navy and yellow) and possibly a choice of the shirt colour. I think that it would be cute if the skirts would be navy/yellow plaid. We are the PIPERS after all. (Lots of Scots in the community, plus I'm half Scottish an proud of it :) )
Rhian Lafaye 01-23-2004, 09:10 PM My school is getting uniforms next year which is dumb cos I'm going to be graduating next year. I'm AGAINST
jessi15 01-24-2004, 12:29 AM My school is getting uniforms next year which is dumb cos I'm going to be graduating next year. I'm AGAINST
That's the only thing for me, I am also graduating next year.
seanlindo06 01-24-2004, 02:24 PM LEAVE US ALONE!! Who really thinks that clothes can account for school shootings and such? You can get a pair of baggy jeans from tj maxx for 13 dollars, an all white shirt from wal-mart for 3, and some white reebok classics for 49, instant coolness
lilmsunpopular 01-24-2004, 11:15 PM I personally think uniforms don't stop school shootings. I haven't ever had to wear a uniform and I wouldn't want to. It's not going to stop cliques any. Their will still be the jerks who make fun of people.

I agree, but that's not the only reason schools get uniforms. Our school doesn't have shooting or murder of any sort, so I don't think that's the reason they want to get them. Some schools results show improved attendance, boost of school pride, higher achievements. and more self-esteem in the students. Although uniforms are still being discused and therefor not for sure yet, our school could definately use more pride.
Go Galt PIPERS !!!!
Ayosu_Ling 01-25-2004, 01:53 AM I'm against uniforms, to the fullest extent. I don't believe it's right to seclude people from the freedom of expression that the first amendment considers 'law abiding'. Hm, well, that's just me. I think that uniforms are for prisoners. Even though school resembles alot like prisons sometimes, we should still have the freedom of wearing what we like in school.
Dude128 01-25-2004, 03:23 AM oh yeah, I'd definately be more likely to go to school if I had to wear a uniform.
</sarcasm>
I don't not go to school because I can't find anything to wear. being forced to wear a uniform would make me want to stay home. "improved attendence" is ridiculous.
I think the idea of school pride is kind of ridiculous. I didn't choose where I go to school, and I have no choice unless I wanted to go to a Catholic school, which I would not want to do for 4 reasons: I don't consider myself Catholic, they charge tuition, they require uniforms that also happen to be ugly :P, and it would require 4 bus rides every day (1 to the school I go to now, 1 to the private school, 1 to the public school from the private school, and 1 from the public school home). I think my school does a lot of dumb things, the sports teams are bad (with the exceptions of track, hockey, and boys soccer), etc. (not to mention the fact that we're the "Admirals", which is the second stupidest name I've ever heard, and I think lefty knows the first :P) I have no school spirit because it's dumb :P
Ayosu_Ling 01-25-2004, 07:05 PM Hmm.. I don't have any school spirit. The principal is an ^^^^ and I don't fancy many of the students that go there, either. I am not sure how my school's teams do in games. I don't really care. I'm just glad I'm leaving after this year.
lilmsunpopular 01-25-2004, 07:16 PM I agree, but that's not the only reason schools get uniforms.
I have no school spirit what so ever. People at my school ^^^^ me off. Most of the people who ^^^^ me off are on the foot team, so I boo the sports teams at pep rallys. I know that's rude, but they have done lots of bad things to me. Yeah, they deserve it.
jessi15 01-25-2004, 08:07 PM What do you think if the school staff (teachers, principals...) were to also wear the same uniforms?
LeprechaunSeer 01-25-2004, 09:32 PM I had to wear uniforms for four years (4th 5th 6th & 7th) and absolutely hated it. The reason we wore uniforms was so that we could concentrate more on outr studies and not on what everyone was wearing. That didn't really work, if you think about it, shoes, purses, and other accessories are really what seperate cliques, and of course those were not banned. Also, in Middle School, kids are going to be mean wether you wear uniforms or not. There were still, Wal-Mart uniforms and 'Name Brand' uniforms, so it really didn't make a difference. While the thought is clearly there in thinking uniforms are a good way to promote studying, if a child doesn't want to study, odds are their clothes aren't going to make them.
weird girl 01-25-2004, 10:07 PM The reason we wore uniforms was so that we could concentrate more on outr studies and not on what everyone was wearing.....While the thought is clearly there in thinking uniforms are a good way to promote studying, if a child doesn't want to study, odds are their clothes aren't going to make them.
I find that it's easier for me to study when I'm comfortable, not when I'm wearing some stupid uniform.
What do you think if the school staff (teachers, principals...) were to also wear the same uniforms?
UGH! That would be the worst! I DEFINITELY do not want to wear the same clothes as my teacher!
I heard that you tend to be more confident if you are wearing something you absolutely love. This probably wouldn't be the case for a person who wants to be with the "in" crowd (dumb dumb dumb if you ask me) and he/she is wearing something he/she likes and someone makes fun of what that person is wearing.
draconis 02-04-2004, 02:47 AM i have a list of resons why i'm against them.
1. it's just a way for them to make money.
2. it hammpers creativity and inforces conformity.
3. i know there are some girls who like wearing knee-high skirts but i'm not one.
4. it promotes a dreary attitude.
Playgurl1006 02-24-2004, 10:52 PM Kids should be allowed to express who they are. Its not fair to make them wear uniforms during "the best years of their lives". :puppy: :froggie:  :star: :cheer:
Lemon Squash 02-24-2004, 11:06 PM Haha the school days i've had have definatly not been the best years of my life. I've never known different.. i've always had to wear uniform to school.. and i really never saw a problem with it apart the blazer i had to wear was uncomfortable. We did have a few days in school were everyone could wear what they wanted to. One of the day loads of people were asking me 'Are you a goth?' because i wore big denim pants.. i said to them i'm not a goth but you know what people are like now and they took no notice.. and after that i got a nick name because of my 'pants' which stuck with me for a long time. I'm not a goth though because i don't wear black and *cough* I HATE the music they listen to.. i hardly even listen to music at all. Anyway heh.. having tried wearing uniform and a few days with no uniform i think uniform is better.. heh because it sort of stops people being judged by the clothes they wear in school.. and things like that.. cliques still exist but i'm guessing it'll have been cut down a lot more than schools that let you wear what you want. =X
salomeyasobko 02-24-2004, 11:25 PM i wouldn't really mind having uniforms at my school. even if they aren't cute, you save a lot of money. also, i think being "stylish" would be less of a big deal that way. :) i sort of.. want them now :D
pcsagewiz 02-25-2004, 11:00 AM I Am against them you should be able to wear what you want its a free world :)
starrgurl 02-28-2004, 03:52 AM we just got them this year and I already feel like I lost my person ality because every one looks the same!:help: I am sooo agenst them. My apoligese to those that support uniforms
camogirl3000 02-28-2004, 05:01 PM we just got them this year and I already feel like I lost my person ality because every one looks the same!:help: I am sooo agenst them. My apoligese to those that support uniforms
right on!
Goddess 02-28-2004, 09:15 PM I'm against school uniforms. I think clothes reveal who you are on the inside. I think students should have the right to express themselves, even if it is through their clothes.
tkdgurl927 02-29-2004, 02:45 AM ugh! i cant stand them! i had to wear them in grade school and i hated it! im glad that im in high school now and DONT have to wear them now! BUT MY LIL BRO IS STUCK WEARING THEM NOW! HAHAHA!
bejayel 03-01-2004, 10:38 PM i dont see why people are so against school uniforms. many people say it takes away from the personality. and many religions will argue that they have to wear certain things because of their religion. In fact if there are school uniforms enforced in an area religious people should not be there if their religious goes against what is being worn. also if anyhting a school uniform adds to personality.
uniforms add a sense of equality among the student body. There is no space to discriminate when there are uniforms in place. discrimination turns to hate and causes fights and people gettign kicked out of school and what not. There is no longer discrimination and isolation due to clothing choices. everythign is now based on personality and social groups are all eventually absorbed by one another. People learn to like and dislike people from their personality instead of their clothing or appearance. Ethnic differances are usually cant be stopped because that jsut how people are but at least they will be able to make their own group of people to play with. Grades are generally a lot better when school uniforms are in place because that cute girl in front of you cant show off her cleavage and flash every student in the school. Uniforms keeping weapons out of the school.
when people think of school uniforms they think of flashy suits or mini skirts or soemthing. however this is not always true. lots of times the student body has a big say in the uniform choice, and in some cases even design the clothing. other time it is jsut a rule that you ahve to wear a certain color shirt and a pocketless pair of pants or something. Really whats wrong with looking the same as everyone else for 8 hours of yoru day? its not like it is going to ruin yrou life. in fact it will probably make ti better in the end. (by the way i am a grade 12 student in canada, and my school does not enforce uniforms. and no i am not a loser nerd or something) Kids these days neglect to think about the future and are stuck in the past and present. Honestly i cant think of one bad thing about school uniforms. keep the above points in mind before makign yrou decision about uniforms. then try and say that they are not beneficial in anyway. i hope my opinion helps a bit. good luck
MaGiCSuN 03-01-2004, 10:43 PM "if everybody would be the same, the world with be a boring place to stay"
i don't know from who it is, but that's what my mom always told me lol (not about schooluniforms). And in this case i still agree. I don't want to go to a school where everybody looks the same, where everybody has the same clothes, where you can't say "hey nice shirt where did you bought it?" etc :)
And like some other people said: put in schooluniforms and people will be showing off with their gucci bags etc. It has no use...
Tsuki Usagi 03-02-2004, 02:44 AM I wear a uniform and I don't think it hinders my ability to express myself. There are many ways for someone to do that which have nothing to do with clothing. Most schools which have uniforms aren't overly strick on them and the students are allowed to have whatever bags, and jackets they which. The one I go to has a full uniform, that inclued the type of shoes we wear. Plus we can only have specific backpacks. But there are no rules about hair styles  I think I should dye my hair again.
Dude128 03-02-2004, 03:26 AM In fact if there are school uniforms enforced in an area religious people should not be there if their religious goes against what is being worn.
maybe what you were trying to say just came out wrong, but are you saying that if a school dress code goes against religious teachings, that those people shouldn't be there? that's ridiculous. if someone is a member of a relgion that specifies that a head covering be worn, for instance, and that's against the school's dress code, the dress code should be changed, because everyone should be entitled to their own religion. they shouldn't have to move or something just because of the dress code.
and let me get this straight:
-dress codes don't prevent people from being individuals.
-dress codes prevent people from being judged based on their appearance.
how does that work? ok, so people can still have whatever coats they want, but because everyone wears the same thing, people won't judge. that doesn't add up.
I've never understood the argument about grades being better with uniforms. people flashing various body parts isn't that big of a distraction, and I personally think that I would do better when I'm comfortable in the clothes I choose to wear (I'm a jeans and a T-shirt guy. it's comfortable. I am rarely seen wearing anything other than that).
I would think that if a dress code was in place, the school would be more restrictive about things. I know someone that goes to a private school that has uniforms, and according to him, they are more restrictive about other appearance-related things, too- he said he used to dye his hair quite a bit, but only over the summer and during long breaks and things, because the school doesn't approve of it.
Owlie42 03-02-2004, 03:45 AM I have no school spirit what so ever. People at my school ^^^^ me off. Most of the people who ^^^^ me off are on the foot team, so I boo the sports teams at pep rallys. I know that's rude, but they have done lots of bad things to me. Yeah, they deserve it.
My school has made a RELIGION out of school spirit. Every morning, 7:20, on the dot, the really annoying woodchuck-lookalike that is our principal gets on the PA and screams "GO AAAVES!!!" The spirit days at school are...for lack of a better word, retarded. I do not want to spend most of my time in green and yellow clothing. I hate most of the sports teams (my school wastes sooo much money on sports) and I hate the administration. Stupid school...
Naoko 03-06-2004, 06:31 AM Well, I suppose I'm divided. I think forcing us to wear them isn't fair, but I think they should be available to us if we want them, though. Because I think they're so cute! (Especially like the Japanese school-girl uniform, called a seifuku or seira fuku...) I want one. All I can get is a cheerleader uniform, though, and I am NOT going to be a cheerleader!
evil_styrofoam 03-06-2004, 02:47 PM i go to woodward academy (private school) and it is really famous cuz its a good school and all that. we wear uniforms though. im ok with uniforms cuz you dont get maked fun of and you dont have to decide what to wear every morning. sometimes when i go with my mom grocery shopping after school, i still have my uniform on and ppl start saying like, "Oooo your in Woodard. thats a really good school." i like having the attention. :D
elfenheroin 03-06-2004, 03:13 PM I really don't like uniforms because girls have to wear a skirt.
Some students are even losing their fashion sense *gasps*.
I want to wear my own clothes because they are way cooler than the unforms I have/had.
Besides the blouse made me look fat...
Meggy_moo666 03-06-2004, 07:29 PM Hey!
OMG I AM SO AGAINST IT YOU CAN NOT BE URSELF UR NOT A INDIVIDUAL PPL WILL LOOOK THE SAME SCHOOL I LIKE JAIL ANYWAY AND NOW THE WANT UNIFORMS THRERE CRAZY.!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
ham_let 03-19-2004, 07:43 PM i don't have to wear a uniform (*i'm in elementary) but next year i will b/c i'm going to high school. i thought it was an ok idea, kinda for school spirit and girls (since a lot of them prefer not to wear boyish pants) wear skirts all summer ;) lol. (hope i didn't offend anyone..) now that skirts are gone, doesn't seem to have much use... lol. *keep in mind this is a teenagers point of view...

Im against School Uniform, because they waste parents' money on buying them, they are in most cases uncomfortable and I notice that a lot more work gets done on Non-Uniform days in my school believe it or not. Everyone feels comfortable in their own clothes and can express themselves.
Rinoa Heartilly 04-11-2004, 01:51 PM Ugh I ABHOR wearing uniforms with a passion. I've never had to wear a uniform aside from PE, but kids our age need to be able to express their individuality. It's true that wearing the same clothing as others would keep others from "dressing better than others" so that those who can't afford to buy designer clothing every month won't feel inferior, but uniforms still create a problem. Since everyone is made to look the same, everyone's going to struggle to be better than the other person which creates a bigger tension between two people. Regardless of what people wear, cliques will still form and people will still be made fun of. Why can't we just be ourselves? Your school should definitely take the views of the students into consideration. I don't know about you guys, but I've noticed that many people from private schools have been a bit...rebellious. I'm not saying all have...but if people can't express themselves through clothing, they'll express it in a different, less desirable way. This is what i saw a few weeks ago when my parents tried to put me in a private school *shudders* Thank goodness they listened to me! But now they're thinking of sending me to one for high school...noooo! All in all, uniforms suck! It's not part of being a kid or a teenager! It's like that Disney commerical..."express yourself..." or something similar to that.
HTMyaL 05-15-2004, 02:28 PM I am undecided. First off, if you wear uniforms, you don't have to worry about what you wear to school and what others say. However, uniforms drain individuality from what you wear. So I'd say schools should establish something in-between. Heck if I know what that would be, but I hope you sort of understand.
Sheila 05-16-2004, 09:42 AM I am for uniforms. Since I have personally worn them, I do not think they take away ones individuality. Or cause people not to do their work better. Also, the 'poor' kids don't have to worry about getting picked on, because they don't have name brand clothing. (Hope that makes sense.)
limpeuile 05-17-2004, 04:12 AM Uniforms are a nightmare to me. I take pride in wearing what no one else will to class (i.e. a chicken costume with a gorilla mask). It's one of the reasons i love my school: no dress code, no uniforms. basically you can't wear a wet bathing suit to class. You can come in with wet clothes, or a bathing suit, but not a wet bathing suit.
limpeuile 05-17-2004, 04:20 AM Ahh, editing took longer than 5 minutes, so I was unable to change it. Really sorry for the double post, though.
First off, I go to a liberal private boarding hight school in middle-of-nowhere-Alabama, so my views probably don't apply to your situation.

In between would probably be dress codes (like my old school: skirts had to be a certain length, no chains/spikes, no fake hair colors, no midriff). From what I've seen from schools with uniforms is that students wear them differently and become sensitive to how they're worn (with girls, length of the skirt, the type of shoes, jewelry, how the blouse is worn, make-up, hair-dos). In the end, if cliques are formed based on looks, they will be formed and no school-board can stop it--in all honesty, can you make plastic surgery a requirement?
salomeyasobko 05-17-2004, 04:34 AM the main reason i would want them is because of the money issue.. some people can't afford the same clothing as others.. as people have pointed out [even those against it], you can individualize with the way you wear your hair, the jewelry you have on, etc.. it's just helps the poor kids out, so parents only have to buy weekend clothing. and plus, they can still have school dances without requiring uniforms! anyway, just my point of view. maybe i'll talk to the school board  ;)
autumnphyre 08-18-2004, 08:16 PM I've just finished school and i HATED wearing my uniform, especially my blazer. It felt horrible to wear. People say that school uniform is good because if we wore our own clothes the people who weren't as well off as others would stand out more. Thats not true, you can still tell with a uniform, how well off they are on most occasions. Also say that it's expensive to keep having to buy a seperate lot of clothes to wear, theres no point in it. You wake up get changed in to uniform, later get home then get changed to casual wear ...... silly really, scrap the idea of a working environment. People at school are CHILDREN not ADULTS which i think people forget, kids need to hold on to their youth because we're growing up far too quick........im gonna be quiet now, i have to much to say and already used up space >_<:nerd:

I agree wholheartedly with everything you said.
I mainly hate uniforms because like I said in another thread, I find them uncomfortable. I'd rather wear something I feel good in than clothes I find uncomfortable for 7 hours. Bleh. :(
And also, unforms are so stinking expensive, and my parents have a hard enough time paying tuition for the school I go to!
I think the only good thing about a uniform is that no one will ever get on my case about wearing the same outfit 2 times in a month.
animegurl65 08-19-2004, 12:38 AM i like uniforms. but i'll update this once i go try mine on...^_~
thezeppzone 08-19-2004, 12:47 AM well it hurts to see yet another old thread brought u but since a few people posted...lol
if our school made us wear uniforms we would have to pay for them im sure, because, well, our school system is poor. They just got a $97mill bond last year but for building a new high school and renovating old, and they cant use it for anything else besides what they said they were....
.....ours is so big i dont think they would ever do that where i live...im not really against but im not really for it either...if they made me, i would, because thats the way life is and i follow rules lol..
happycrack 10-11-2004, 08:39 PM I always hated school uniforms!
VickieCrager 12-06-2004, 06:04 PM Sorry, no advertising. Please read the forum rules, thanks. - Your friendly forum mod
Munchkin 12-07-2004, 02:54 AM ^ Wow....I personally don't like school uniforms, but you're waging an all-out war on them?
tucker 12-07-2004, 03:57 AM yeah, as much as protests are fun, i dont think wearing a pretty armband will help :)
im against, its wrong on quite a few levels. yes it can help keep your school safe, but other than that, i see no reason for them.
aviegrace 12-07-2004, 07:27 AM OMG wow this thread was first posted JANUARY JANUARY JANUARY ...
Munchkin 12-08-2004, 12:30 AM hahahah...see what happens when people drag out old threads. aviegrace has a heart attack.
angel_victory 12-08-2004, 12:49 AM OMG!!! who doesnt like uniforms lol!? then no one would have to worry about what to wear or what they need to buy at the mall!!! its great!!!
r_j_g_2003 12-08-2004, 01:57 AM ok i don't think kind should have to wear anything to school we should all be nudists lol joking srry couldn't resent *slaps himself in the face*
ratch26 12-08-2004, 03:36 PM i had to wear uniform - hated it but it made sense - it could get all dirty and your mum wouldnt go mental at you - also everyone dressed the same - no bullying or being picked on about clothes - prepared you for a working enviroment where you had to wear clothes - my uniform was extremely comfortable :)
Margo 12-08-2004, 11:25 PM At our school, people just use gym class to wear their skanky clothes because the dress code doesn't apply as much there. It doesn't really matter to me one way or the other. My school will never wear uniforms (we are a small town public school) so it's kind of dumb to really go all out protesting them or anything. Sometimes I think it would be nice to not have to stress out about whether I look okay or not, clothes-wise.
lauren7 12-27-2004, 10:17 PM I am for school uniforms. You'll hate me for this!
In unif. no one can come in wearing something...unapropriate, and therefore...distract someone else.
aerith86 12-28-2004, 01:48 AM - Delete my post please, I didn't realise the thread originally started months ago!
aviegrace 12-28-2004, 03:04 AM when someone else have a school uniform project they will start a new thread.
