View Full Version : The Far Side
Makar 01-17-2004, 07:52 AM Who here likes Gary Larson's The Far Side? It is, in my opinion, the greatest comic of all time. I own almost all the the books he came out with, but I want to get the one that just came out; it contains every single comic he ever made, and it's over a hundred bucks!
So, post your favourite Far Side comics here! I actually discovered you can find a lot of them if you use the Google image search. This is one of my favourites:

There's also another one I like that shows people linging up in Heaven and ^^^^, and the angel in Heaven hands the first person in line a harp and says, "Welcome to Heaven, here's your harp," while the demon in ^^^^ says "Welcome to ^^^^, here's your accordian." I love this guy; his ideas are truely unique.
Rosey 01-17-2004, 08:09 AM This one has been a long time favorite of mind:

Makar 01-17-2004, 08:14 AM Haha that's great! I don't think I've ever seen that one, but I knew it was going to be about Madonna before the caption even finished loading. :lolol:
Rosey 01-17-2004, 08:17 AM I've forgotten a lot of the ones I've read but that one made such an impression on me way way back that I never forgot it.
I laugh every time I see it. I printed...it's going to get posted somewhere around my computer...lol
(good night..i gotta sleep, must get up in 3 hours!)

Oh I've read them before, they have them in the papers when we travel. :)
~x~karyn~x~ 01-17-2004, 03:35 PM I love far side! One year I had one of those calendars you flip every day and it was Far Side. My brother just got a Far Side book from the librray and I stole it from him. hehe.
One of my favorites is a spider who hung himself and in his web it says "Goodbye World"
Tsuki Usagi 01-17-2004, 06:13 PM I like usually like them but sometimes they are really dumb.
Makar 01-17-2004, 08:26 PM I love far side! One year I had one of those calendars you flip every day and it was Far Side.
I had one of those too one year! I ended up just flipping through the whole thing at once instead of waiting for each day to read them. :P
~x~karyn~x~ 01-17-2004, 09:27 PM Hehe, it was funny when my friend came over because she made me save all the ones that she wasn't there for and she read them. When she spent the night, I wasn't allowed to flip my calendar, it was he job.
Dude128 01-18-2004, 03:22 AM I like The Far Side :P I have the monthly Far Side calendar... :P
beth, most newspapers don't have The Far Side because Gary Larson no longer produces it, but a lot of newspapers used to have it. although for some reason the Daily News fairly recently started putting old ones in.
and my aunt gave my dad the 2 book set of the complete collection for Christmas. man that thing weighs a ton lol- and I was flipping through it, and what I found annoying is that it doesn't seem to be in chronological order within each month- I was looking for the one that ran on the day I was born, and I found December 1985 alright, but then the individual days aren't in order...
Rosey 01-18-2004, 04:51 AM That's weird dan. Someone where i used to work had some of the books and it was really interesting because it had some that never made it to press because of one thing or another and then gary larson commented on some letters he got from people because of some..you wouldn't believe the idiot letters he got one some harmless drawings...some were just so ridiculous.

Oh yeah, I have that book! It's called The Prehistory of the Far Side. I learned a lot about Larson and his career as a cartoonist.
It has this page where it showed comics in the paper whose captions got switched around, because Dennis the Mennis was shown next to the Far Side in this particular paper. It was hilarious...I'll have to scan it in. :)
Rosey 01-18-2004, 06:36 AM That's right!!
I remember that one, that was one of the funnier ones. Don't you think some of the people who wrote to him were totally loony?? One was something to do with dogs i think but i can't remember.
We need a thread with calvin and hobbes :)
Makar 01-18-2004, 10:52 AM Yeah, three of them were about dogs...the hate mail, anyway. He got quite a few concerning this one:
http://www.eifrem.com/~jonas/Fotoalbum/gary/index.php?i=24
Another was from a panel called "Bobbing for poodles", which showed a bunch of alligators crowded around a metal basin. Larson noted that he was glad he didn't go with his first caption "Bobbing for babies".
And I'm not going to get into the third one in the under 13 chat. :)
Rosey 01-18-2004, 03:54 PM that's the one! bobbing for poodles... that one was funny..i think if he had done the baby one, that would have been a little too far.
Makar 01-18-2004, 03:59 PM Yeah well, this is The Far Side, after all. :P You should have seen the ones he had made up while it was still called Nature's Way. Some of them were pretty disturbing...the ones that didn't make the paper, that is.
