View Full Version : Fonts
Aneesah 02-22-2003, 08:42 AM Umm, I have my own website, and all the text in it is in my own font. Only I have that font installed on my PC. So, how do I make other people who visit my site (who obviously DON'T have my font on their computer) see all the text in MY font? That is, besides asking them to download my font and installing it. Is there a way?
apples 02-22-2003, 08:45 AM Yep. :) You can do it by putting text on a graphic.
lilchici13 02-22-2003, 04:46 PM i think you can see it anyway. I go to sites with fonts i don't have on my computer and i don't hav to download anything

but you will see another font that the actual font that the owner of the site has selected for it
that's also why you have to select more then one font for your website in case that the person doens't have the first font.
just seperate the font names with a "," so like this:
font-face: arial, verdana, georgia
Just the things that you WANT to show no matter what should be done on graphics or yeah put a link to the .zip file from the font on your index.html page (splash page) so that people can decide to view the site like it has to be viewed or to continue anywayz without downloading the font.

Mirna
lilchici13 02-22-2003, 05:07 PM but i know i don't have any of the fonts that i see on these websites. they are these weird exotic ones! o so if you put say
font-face:parkaved, Plaza and i don't have parkaved will plaza show up??
MaGiCSuN 02-22-2003, 05:14 PM if you have plaza then that one will show up yeah
i believe if you have none of them that are listed in the code then the font will automatically go to verdana or arial or something when you view the page. I"m not sure, but at least something that everyone has.
I had once georgia as body text, and i know that not everyone has that font becaues not every version of windows has it in the font folder. So i just uploaded the font and put a link on the site so that people can choose to view the site with the actual font or to view the site with the font that is standard on their computer.
but what i mean is for body text, so the typed text. Not the text on the images or in the head image etc. Those things are viewable for everyone because it's an image. So if you see weird fonts on a layout than it is a graphic. Mostly the only time we use fonts for text are for the content. The rest is mostly done by graphics
starlet 02-22-2003, 05:48 PM I recently found a code that lets you do it, but ive never tried it and im not sure it works/is good etc but you could try it out...

Aneesah 02-23-2003, 01:46 AM Thanks, everybody, but:
- startlet, I went to that site, and the tutorial was helpful, and I tried to do what it said, but I can't upload a .ttf file...I use geocities, and they said .ttf is an invalid filename...So I don't know if there's another way. And what's CSS1 and CSS2?
- Magicsun, but I can't upload the font...:(
-I've put some of the text as an image file, but it's a little pain in the neck...Besides, I have to save that file as a JPEG, and that makes it...ugly...
Thanks anyway, everybody.
Aneesah 02-23-2003, 09:22 AM Another thing, if I put two fonts like Magicsun says, are there spaces between the comma? Like, is it like this:
Arial,Verdana
or like this:
Arial, Verdana
Another thing, why won't the images on my website show up???
Thanks.
starlet 02-23-2003, 06:42 PM no spaces, so its
arial,verdana,tahoma
and is it the site in your profile the images arent showin up in? because i can see those fine....

try " refreshing" your site when you are on it.
Aneesah 02-24-2003, 06:45 AM Startlet, no, currently I don't have any images in my website, 'coz they keep "not showing up"...I originally wanted to put my drawings on the page, but I ended up just putting a link to the images.
Magicsun, I think I know what's the problem now. Thanks. Oh, by the way, do you know how I can upload my font?
Bye.
MaGiCSuN 02-24-2003, 05:50 PM I found out that geocities.com DOES allow zipfiles. so if you zip your font or upload the zipfile you got when you downloaded the font and then upload it to your own space you can link it directly to the zipfile. When people click the link the download will automatically start

Mirna
Aneesah 02-26-2003, 09:32 AM Yeah ok thanks, Magicsun. I did that, so now people can download the zip file, right? Bye!
MaGiCSuN 02-26-2003, 01:03 PM yep they can download it and unzip it and put the .tff file into the FONT directory and they will view your page just fine :) A little tip is to type next to the download that they have to have unzip the file, so they need a program similar to Winzip for that.

Mirna
gotfaith3 02-26-2003, 11:54 PM i never did get it, what do you do if you have a certain font on your page but you know its not on others, how do you get them to be able to see it?? please help....
Aneesah 02-28-2003, 08:39 AM Ok, thanks, MagicSun. But what d'you mean, "put the .tff file into the FONT directory"? I mean, if they just install that font, then my website will look like how I see it, right? Bye!
