What all can you use an ip address for?

Story:My friend has someone posting comments anonymously, but she has there ip address. I did the tracking and found that they live in the same city as us and who there provider is. I'm not gonna e-mail the provider saying they are being mean cause they aren't, she just would like to know who it is.

Mainly, I'm wondering is there anymore info I can get? What do the numbers mean, b/c it is really close to mine, does that mean they live near me? Any help would be appreciated! Thanks and Merry Xmas!

go here...

http://www.arin.net/whois/

enter the ip address in the text box and press the 'submit query' button. you can usually get a lot of information about the person using that.

well usually when you look up an IP, the address it gives is where it's registered, which is usually wherever the ISP is based (or some other random towns- AOL's IPs seem to be registered in a whole bunch of different towns in Virginia :P)

you probably couldn't get any more specific information. if you had a problem with someone using a certain IP, for example, you could find out who their ISP is and contact them, and they would deal with that customer. but you probably wouldn't be able to find out their name or anything like that.

the IP is just a number that identifies you when you are connected to the Internet. IPs registered to the same ISP are usually fairly similar, so that's probably why it's similar to yours (assuming it's the same ISP- otherwise, it would have to be coincidence).
