I am currently unemployed and I can't afford to buy a good virus program, so I use McAfee Freescan and AVG Free. McAfee says I have three "low risk" viruses, but AVG says I have none. Anyway, I clicked on the virus information and underneath "Removal Instructions", I get this message..
"All Users:
Use specified engine and DAT files for detection and removal.
Additional Windows ME/XP removal considerations"

So, I click on the link for engine and DAT files and I get a long list of files. How am I supposed to find out which one to download to fix this problem?

*Actually was I supposed to post this here? Or General?*

I'm not sure of the name of the viruses, but they were all ones that changed your homepage, which has happened recently.

I tried that link you gave me and that one said no virus was found. AVG Free said none was found, but McAfee said three were (the one I mentioned above). I'm not sure which ones to believe

hmm if it changes your homepage then there probably is a virus on your computer. I hate those kind of virus, they are SO annoying.

If you find the name I might be able to find you the removal intructions.

yeah well sometimes that's not always the answer, you lose *everything* and if you're like me, you really don't want to spend 1 day reinstalling and finding all your stupid access codes to programs and bookmarks again...especially when it's one of those low risk viruses.

yep, i agree. But it will still fix it.

Ok, I'm doing another rescan using McAfee Freescan to post the results, so hopefully someone can help. I also dont think reformatting is an option right now since I can't do it myself and I can't afford to pay someone else to do it right now.

Here's one of the results

"File Name : C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\soundmx.exe
Virus Name: StartPage-W

"File Name: C:\id=gertiebeth&opt=hhj&rw=468&rh=60&cv=210&ui...
Virus Name: Exploit-CodeBase

"File Name: C:\WINDOWS\fntldr.exe
Virus Name: StartPage-W

I really hope I can get these fixed myself. I can't afford to pay someone to fix it for me. I'm gonna be lost if I have to go without a computer until I cana fford to get it fixed lol

Those are more trojans than virus which is why panda didn't pick it up. A regular virus scan isn't going to pick up trojans, spyware.

Try http://www.trojanscan.com/

I think they fix it too but i'm not for sure.

I'm looking for manual deletions but those are a pain, it's been my experience that they don't always work. I'll post in a little while again. Let me know if you try that link and if it works.

edit:
ok so i found them faster:

here is for the exploit thing:

I hate computers *lol*. I tried the http://www.trojanscan.com/ and got nothing. I am willing to try those links, but that was my problem when I made my first post. I got those links from McAfee, but I don't know which one to download

Gah, I am computer illiterate

If you have macafee just download one of those, depends on when you updated your definitions last. If you've done it recently, use the weekly, if not, get the superdat file.

If not I found the manual deletion for one:

I've got both the start page ones gone (yay!). I was browsing Google and a post on a message board caught my eye and it was from someone having the same problem I had with it. I read that thread and was able to get rid of it. The only one I have now is the exploit one. The dat files I tried to download gave me an error "Unable to find any qualifying products" I think maybe I need McAfee program installed on my computer, but I just use the one at http://msn.mcafee.com. I'm thinking, though nto positive, that might be why I can't use those dat files.

And in case Im not able to get online, tomorrow, I want to wish everyone a Merry Christmas :)

Yeah if you use an online scan and don't actually have the mcafee, those dat files are going to do you no good.

I found this on the manual removal of the exploit one:

Their are free virus protection programs.

Here is what PC World has to say about them.

Those aren't viruses, they're trojans.

Those aren't viruses, they're trojans.

Still it might help to have some virus software. I have Mcafee.
