I was told that there is a code you can use to get rid of the need for putting "www" infront of the domain name. Does anyone know what it is and where do I put it? Thanks

View Full Version : www code? JGC04 10-23-2003, 06:38 PM I was told that there is a code you can use to get rid of the need for putting "www" infront of the domain name. Does anyone know what it is and where do I put it? Thanks knudddel 10-23-2003, 06:51 PM Do you mean: <A HREF="http://URL.com">here</A> instead of: <A HREF="http://www.url.com">here</A> or what? I'm nut sure what you're talking about CitrusOrange37 10-23-2003, 07:24 PM i know what they're talking about. for some big commercial sites, like ebay, you can just type "ebay.com" into your browser and it will take you to ebay. they want to know if there's any code to put in your site so viewers don't need to type the "www" and sorry, i dont know how to do it :-/ Arc Angel 10-23-2003, 07:37 PM It's not the just the big sites. 90% of the sites I find don't need it. In fact it's quite rare to find a site that does. I don't know how you would do it either. I think it may depend on the type of server your host is running. =\ lefty 10-23-2003, 07:37 PM I don't think there's a certain code for it... if anything at all, it sounds like something your host would have to set up if it doesn't automatically do it. JGC04 10-24-2003, 01:26 AM Well my sister (who owns the site-to-be) was told by this guy who is like 'I know of it, but I don't know the code, maybe my brother knows it.' And she asked me to find out if anyone knew... darkowl 10-24-2003, 01:35 AM is there a difference btwn the 2? Because i know that the cookie for my site is diffrent if i put www in front of the domain. but i think it all depends on your host. Loren 10-24-2003, 08:28 PM It probley has something to do with how your host sets up/registers the domain name. I even find some sites that don't work if you type www. helenmelon89 10-26-2003, 12:00 PM I think that unless you specifically have a www in front of you domain name you dont need the http:// thing. Also some websites now, for example funky-chickens.com (an html help site) you can just type in Funky Chickens and it will take you to the site. darkowl 10-26-2003, 03:56 PM that's just because funky chickens payed for more than one domain Loren 10-26-2003, 04:50 PM No, it's not your browser automaticaly puts the http:// because for example if you used ftp:// you would be use an ftp protocal to connect and not an http protocal. helenmelon89 10-26-2003, 08:04 PM Some websites purchased the domain name www.DOMAIN.com but some of them are just DOMAIN.com and they will not work if you put a www in front of them. |
